We hiked out to some cellar holes between the mountains across the street.  Roughly 5 miles.
Did some metal detection.  Cool stuff.
Stopped for some soup and cheese then came home.
Excellent day!!

So..........What did you find? Any Colonial coppers? Silver pieces of eight? Or just horse shoes and harmonica reeds. LOL

I have a few machines myself.

Had a rotten fence post…

so decided to get started on mending it instead of sitting on my kiester.

Got the old post out…

hole is too big so I used a rather unorthodoxed method to replace.

I always wrap my posts in roofing felt paper… maybe it slows the rot- I don’t know.

After the felt paper I used one of those cardboard tube concrete forms and spaced it away from the post with nails.

Got the post where I wanted it…

added a little dirt to stabilize everything…

filled the tube with concrete…

When it sets up I will backfill the hole with dirt tamped in tight…

Tied the gate back where it won’t swing around and knock the post out of plumb.

The guy that installed the fence when we moved in in 2007 screwed the end posts next to the house to the house.

Talk about shortcuts- he did not want to move the post out past the footer for the house so he sat the post on top of the footer and screwed the post to the house.

I will be remedying that…

Ah, love a good whiskey to settle things down! Sometimes even a krappy one works too.

Discovered this one by trying something new. Ever try it? It's my favorite by far.

One of the cellars has a pile of charred timber.

Fair amount of crap like shingles and nails.

We did find a few whole bricks and a couple small grates from the heating system.

One single square nail.

There are at least 3 other locations there for the next time we head up.

When the builder put our barn up last year they wrapped all the Poles in self stick  bituthene.

His information is that it changes the lifespan of the PT yellow pine from

"approximately 20 to 40 years"

up to

"40 to 60 years minimum".

In other words, 😜 they don't actually know because it can't be tested, but they can't say "lifetime".

I always seal off the ends, especially if the wood is more porous since the moisture will wick up through the ends substantially.  I bucket of warmed up roofing tar does a nice job.

I worked on the other fence post today…

To get the height I need, I have to dig down 28 inches to keep from cutting the bottom of the post off.

I don’t like to cheat on most projects.

I brought the post off of the house by about 11.5 inches. I will close the gap with two 5.5 inches wide dog-eared fence boards like I did on the other side.

I’ll let the post set at least until Tuesday before I put the split rails and wire back on.

Of course being as anal as I am I had to wash the post hole diggers, shovel, wheel barrow, and most of my tools before storing them.

Then I took the Wheel Horses for a run…

Whilst everybody was racing cars and pigging out, I was battling the heat. Gas chiller was rip roaring at 9 AM and it wasn't even super hot out yet. Spent the afternoon on a hot black roof bypassing controls to keep another chiller running with a bad 2nd stage compressor.

May have been not so hot in NY but at 11AM it was 100 degrees on the southside of my house. New A/C has a outdoor temperature do hickey build into it.

@rjg854 I was at a couple local short tracks this weekend, Craig’s Cruisers and AJ’s Fun Park.  (Go karts ). I saw a couple kids get the little booster cushions from time to time.  They got those for big cars too?

Another scorcher on the barn roof today.  Instead of laying a few strips of underlayment, then a few steel panels, I worked on just underlayment.  It was quite reflective.  I took a funny selfie.  The clouds look like I’m up there enjoying the new Michigan state flower!

I was surprised that I fit right into that car without alterations.  The only thing they changed for me was that Huns device, that goes around your neck to keep your head in place. I just wish I had ALOT more money to have been able to go for more laps.  I was just beginning to feel comfortable with what the car could do. I can see why drivers get addicted to the speed.  That was my birthday experience, from the boys.  They thought the experience would be better than a present and let me tell you brother they were so right!

Before I ever took that ride, I had changed the pulleys on the 854 and on the 1045 to increase their speed.  :teasing-poke:
