I'll second that ... what did you have to fork out for a ton Kev?

I'm at 315 for a 50 bag of 40 lb bags. Softwood. Last year it was 295 so didn't go up that much.

$279.50 for a pallet of 50.  My bags say hard wood, but all I’ve ever seen around here is the ProPellet brand.

That's about right then ... soft woods are always a bit more because of the higher BTU content in them. Resins/pitch in the softwood ya know.

We have lots of choices in pellets here with $$ depending on species of wood they claim to have in the bag.

I been burning them long before the popularity made them pricey. Now back down to normal. The novelty wore off so now just back to us hardcores.

Wow... course anyone burns fuel oil for house heat is livin in the stone age... be cheaper to go get some 55 gallon drums of off road diesel and a transfer pump?? Or is that illegal??

Gasoline road limit is 30 gallons in some states. Not sure about off road diesel.  I know some loggers carry 100 or more but they may have permits.

Definitely a little less expensive around here.

dust accumulated on the tube, but not terrible otherwise

Just keep an eye/ear out for the family for an unexplained cough.

My father had a cough on/off for a few years.

Switched pellet types. No more cough.

Likely won't affect you folks where the pellet bin and stove is in the basement.

That's why I was asking about dust... coal ain't the only thing causing lung issues...

Fair amount of dust... :eusa-think:

Perhaps a square tent cover over chute and bin and tacked to top rails with one side free to access. bungee cords to keep that down... bed sheet, cheese cloth etc...

Take care of your kitty litter issue as well...

Just a thought...

Absolutely agreed.

Up here someone has a stop set up occasionally.

Open the tank.

Dip a strip in the fuel.

Take some information down and you leave ... Or not.

we had a fuel oil furnace at the old house.  We primarily heated with the wood stove, so I didn’t much care.  When it was time to fill the oil drum, I went to the store when diesel was low and filled a 150 gallon fuel tank from a semi truck that was heavily strapped in the bed of my truck.  I put an air chuck and a ball valve on the tank and pressurized it with air… forcing the fuel out.  I found that delivery fees and hazard taxes added up to more than the on road fuel price per gallon.

I just paid 5.05 a gallon for fuel oil , $4.05 for a loaf of bread and 87 octane gas is $2.99 . What wrong with this ?

I can believe that.

So does home heating oil come out of the same big tank at refineries or bulk trucks as off road diesel?

I don't think either are taxed?

Have to ask @Achto... he burns so much of it in Radpherd!

#2 heating oil and diesel fuel of old are pretty much the same.  Today’s diesel has more additives for cleaner burn, anti gel, etc.

Diesel & home heating oil are both considered middle refined fuels. Heating oil is a bit thicker than diesel. In most cases diesel can be used in a home oil burner. No road tax on heating oil or off road diesel.

With the 2 or 3 gallons per year that Radpferd burns the road tax doesn't really matter that much. But I'm still gonna run off road in him & keep my few cents worth of road tax in my pocket.:D

I think we all know the answer Jim,   but do not discuss it here.   Maybe we can have a forum at the Big Show.

Where can you even get it around here Dan?  Only place I know of is up north at a BP station. They make you sign for it but 10 gallons in the tractors there last a long time. Did a little reading and it was said that off road might have a bit more sulfur???

I think off road diesel might be around 4 a gallon here Waldo so Pullhosen's method would save some $$. Bit more hassle than the truck just pulling up but still...

They sell it at Pickett CoOp and at the BP in Rosendale. Pretty sure all diesel is considered ultra low sulfur now. Could be wrong on that though.

Interesting that you guys have to think about where to get off road diesel.

We just take it for granted that it's available within every 10 or 20 miles maximum. So many loggers and excavators.

Road construction or larger construction sites, they just get it delivered like home heating oil. Right off a peddle truck.

You lads are lucky you can get off road, red to us, diesel. Only farmers and fishermen can get red diesel now over here. Everyone else has to use road (white) diesel.

My understanding of the difference between the two types of diesel, is the red dye they put in. Red diesel has less duty on it.

The PITA enviromentalist's are making life more difficult for us all. We can't get coal for the stove any more. Only smokless fuel and it's pathetic and expensive. They're even bringing out rules as to what wood you can burn.

Correct Norm ... what about the excavators, construction and military surely, they can get it.

Most guys that use it have above ground bulk tanks and get it delivered. Then get it to worksites in service trucks.

We’ll just say I know a guy.  He has a diesel pusher motor home.  He knows where some off road diesel is sold.  The motorhome has fuel fillers on both sides.  He strategically placed “GENERATOR FUEL ONLY” above one filler door.  40 gallons to top off his engine tank, many more to top off his generator.
