What did you do today?

Really wanted to work on the 48 inch SD deck for the 520H today, but the grass/ weeds needed cutting… after that I had other Saturday chores… been wanting to put some petunias in the tree stump flower beds I made in memory of my mom/ she loved petunias.

So off to Lowes… almost 3 bills later came home and started planting.

I way over estimated how much garden soil I would need so tomorrow I will get some of my money back…

Petunias are an annual, but mom taught me to pinch the old blooms and toss them in the dirt, and a lot of them return the next year…

Planted some Lillies and Snapdragons in an old Lawn Beauty Spreader that I have not been able to sell on FB… it became yard art…

Well it doesn't really rust quicker but once it does it indeed get a nice oxide layer, a.k.a. patina. If left untreated that is..

I think so.  A couple of freeway underpasses were made using it, on the theory that they would not need to be painted.  Didn't quite work out that way.  Seems the coating of rust would flake off from the vibration of the traffic, causing the steel beams to erode quickly.

Its primary and best use is for giant lock washers.

What did I do today?  Not much.  Walked the dog, visited with a brother in law and his wife for a bit, talkes with my sister on the phone, and watched the robotics team compete (via computer) in the World Championships in Houston.

 

At the end of the qualifying rounds, we were ranked with out of the 75 teams in our division.  We were selected to be on the #2 seeded 4 team alliance.  We made it to the division finals before we were eliminated.

 

The alliance that eliminated us went on to the elimination rounds with the winners of the other 5 divisions.  They ended up in 5th. 

 

All in all, one of the better seasons the team has had.

 

Watching the competitions on the computer works out well.  We don't spend hours sitting on uncomfortable bleachers, and we are already home when the meet ends - the team has a bus ride that starts in Houston and ends in the middle of Mo.

A is for general 'light duty' like art pieces or cladding on buildings. Whereas B is for 'heavy duty' purposes like for example bridges.

Funny thing is that Corten A is the most corrosion resistant.

 

Long story short, the bridge building people should also add a bucket of varnish to their shopping list.

  Reason I asked is that a building at one of my worksites (Washington state) is clad in Corten….must be “A type”

Nice remembrance. 

 

When I were a young'n I had a sort of third set of grandparents. 2nd or 3rd cousins to my father somehow or another. 

They were both factory workers at Starrett Tools. Two decent incomes and never had their own offspring. 

The man, Henry, passed away when I was maybe 11 or 12. 

My Mom planted whatever his favorite flowers were out in the front yard. 

Some sort of perennial. 

Lots of things wouldn't grow in that yard for several different reasons but those "Henry Flowers" as we called them... Always did.

Getting ready to head out into the new garden site to do some more tree clearing around the edges. Been having a challenge getting my bigger saw blade to cut to my satisfaction.

I had a friend of mine do it on a machine at his shop and he did a great job but the angles were a little different from what I'm accustomed to.  This is the third time I've tried to hand sharpen it to get it back where I like.

Forgot to do the rakes a couple times so those were pretty high. I think I got it today....

That sawzall will keep you from ever sharpening another chain… when the sawzall blade starts burning the wood, just change blades…

I use the same gauge and file, just place it over the depth gauges one at a time and file till it removes all it can.

Yessir. 

Works good. Mine is getting just a touch worn. I'll likely use it for the rest of the year and get a new one.

Trina uses that for limbing smaller stuff.

A grinder works well too for those pesky rakers 😅😅

 I use the gauge too. Although I take a couple more swipes with the flat file after I take the gauge off.

Today I've been working on Little Zippy.

I know this isn't a WH, but he is wearing what was left of my WH designated paint.

Trying to get him done and out of the way to make room for the Horses that need repairs.

Had a heckuva busy day. 

Used all 3 chainsaws for 1 tank of fuel, each. 

Trina used the sawzall with pruning blade through 2 batteries. 

The Mama helped out too. 

 

Got quite a bit done. 

Next chance I have after work I'll cut some more.

Today…first… I took back over $100 worth of garden soil to Lowes from planting petunias yesterday…

Picked up 3 bags of black mulch (1 too many). 

Then after putting the rubber hood latches on the Work Horse and painting the underside of the 48 inch SD deck with POR-15, I put mulch in the petunia beds…

without mulch they would probably burn up.

These pics probably look the same as before to you all but the difference is now it’s black mulch you’re seeing instead of dirt…

Helped my friend put some finishing touches his 444 basket Case so that he could take it for a test drive today. A few minor things left to do and this tractor will be show ready.

Had two of those for sale pretty locally I believe around the 600€ running, but needed some paint. Still not a bad deal, 

Somehow prices are dropping down fast here. a 520H and a416-8 sold a couple of months ago for €2000 each.  A nicely restored 312-8 is for sale locally for a couple of months for €800, a mint Jacobsen 1450  €400 and my C175 isn't selling either. 

People are really feeling the war in Ukraine and are avoiding to buy gas or diesel powered equipment. Electric stuff sales better.
