1965 855 Battery Cable

Just picked up a well condition 1965 855 but the guy who placed in storage cut all the wires so I am looking to get some advise on new Battery cables (OEM or Aftermarket) and also wire gauge for rewiring? Thank you.

If the wiring harness is set up as original I believe....... you should have battery cables that go to the back of the ignition switch.

 

Those may have been 8 gauge from the factory but really should be 6 gauge or even larger.

 

Many/most of us have been known to remove the OLD wire and take a measurement of the length and check the stud size, then go to a parts store.

 

I've changed over to building my own battery cables. I buy the lugs and cable online and always know that I have the right size and shape and length.

Thank you. Yes everything is original but what the gentlemen did when putting it away in the shed 5 yrs ago was just cut all the wires where each attaches and disconnected. I’m looking to see if you have any pictures as well but thanks for the information.

I can get you some pictures of an 867 which should be similar. Best bet is to check the top of the electrical section and look for the thread about wiring diagrams. You going to really want a schematic and very very carefully follow what goes to and fro.

 

Removing the ends of all the wires is a very unusual thing to do. Unless you knew the exact reason WHY that happened I'd be prone to making my entire harness over from start.

 

Not at all a difficult thing to do in that particular situation because there's only 10 or 12 wires total.

Lots of people sell battery cables on ebay in various gauges and end configurations. I've gotten several from there.

Sounds great. Thanks. Yes and what he did was just take cut pliers and cut the entire middle section of the wires out from the battery, starter, coil and to the ignition. Pieces of the color coded wire are still attached with the small bolt/nut so that’s a plus as well as I found the wiring diagram for the 855 on the forum. Thanks

 I would ask why he cut all the wires, but I stopped trying to figure out why people do what they do.  Congratulations on your new !!! Please show us some pictures when you get a chance.

I have an auto/electrical repair shop in my area. When ever I get a tractor I'm going to keep I tear off the cables and have them make new ones the correct length in 6 ga. In red and black and have them heat shrink the ends.

There should be an shop near you that repairs starters and generators. Measure what length you need and they can make them to your specs
