Tiller Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Prater

I recieved a used tiller from a member here with the intent to rebuild it for next years work.

I recieved the tiller and took a few starting pics.

Then I stripped of the sheet metal and inspected the welds.

I sent the sheet metal in for blasting along with a couple of wheels. I thought the wheels were 12x8's for my AG tires but when they returned from the blaster they were 12x7's. So if anyone needs a pair let me know. I still need 12x8 or 12x10 wheels for my project.

I then put on a few coats of rust protection

I really dread taking this apart. Anybody have an idea how to identify what the part number is if it did not have any decals?

Did a little painting tonight. I decided on rattle can paint for the tiller. It will be used and I did not really feel like pulling out the SATA gun and all the cleanup and prep. I added some stainless fastners to the hitch and used nylon washers between the painted steel and the locks.

First coat is on over the primer. I will sand it tomorrow and add a second coat if its not raining...

Steve,

Keep up the great work and documentation. I recently acquired a '85 416-8 as well and eventually would love a tiller....your pics of the tiller and tractor on other string will be very helpful for me and for all!! :omg:

Thanks, I did find the holes for the lever, but the lever I ordered from TORO is a bit different. It only has one lever on the shaft. Can someone let me know if thats the way the new levers are supposed to be?

Does the "lever" have several slots along the one side?

You have the correct part. :omg:

The image I posted above is part of a mid-80's tiller lift arrangement that can be used on most 1978 to 2008 "normal" garden tractors.

I am also following your tiller rebuild project with great interest. I just bought a used tiller model 07-36TL01 last week. It's missing some of the attaching hardware, but I can't complain since I bought it at a great price. I plan to use it on my Wheel Horse 414-8 in the fall.

The weather has not really cooperated with the rebuild lately. I should be able to get back on the project when I return from Nashville in a couple of weeks...

Its going to be a slow project as the heat of the day keeps me inside a bit more...I did get a bit of it together with stainless hardware. I need to load up the case and tines and go to a buddies house with a big press. I want to open it up and do an inspection. Still waiting on a new pulley also.

Looks great Steven!

When you open the case, check the chain closely. Mine was cracked in most of the links. #60 chain from TSC is a good replacement.

I need to load up the case and tines and go to a buddies house with a big press.

Be careful if the tines are difficult to remove. The case can break under high loads from the sides. The tines will "give" quite a bit more than you'd think, so the closer to the middle you press (or pull from), the better off you'll be.

I welded 3/4 nuts into the ends of my tines. I can use a long 3/4 bolt to push against the axle and get the tines off. Plus, you can put short bolts in to help keep out water and crud afterward. Works very well!

Good luck! And again, it looks real nice!
