Building New York 21st Century Skyscraper 

 

One Vanderbilt - new skyscraper built near Grand Central Station 

one single continuous cement pour -  400+ cement trucks (20 trucks from four different plants - from evening through next day - approx 18 hours)

cool, back in college days, one summer I worked part time with a roof top skyscraper landscape crew in nyc.  pretty cool stuff we did.  it was interesting getting trees up on those buildings!

Most people would be surprised on what you see on top of those buildings. Some have outright full fledged gardens on them.

We put a raised bed on the roof of the hospital I worked at and grew tomatoes up there. The black roof really heated things up!

it was an great experience working that summer, the one that really sticks out was some super rich ceo from Nebraska had a penthouse apartment, we built big planter boxes just to grow cow corn up there, he just wanted a spot on the roof to hear the wind blowing through the corn

the whole idea of roof top gardens is to lower the Temps of the building in the summer time with the vegetation growing

one of the neater things on top of a building or structure in NYC / NJ area is the athletic complex on top of the Lincoln Tunnel

Very interesting building techniques. But for me .....big city = No thank you. Can’t wait to get to my population 2900 people town.

That's about 2850 too many ..

 

 

 

I'm kidding. Mostly. The few little towns that we live in and around probably total up 4000 or more but it's spread out quite a bit.

Ours is spread out. We will be about 5 miles outside of town but then again, town is basically a red light or two. No supermarket, no liquor stores and two convenience stores with the best breakfast sandwiches.

NYC obviously not for everyone - but a great place 

 

the city is massive - and full of sights 

 

the architecture alone is worth the visit - new and old ... including the tall / giant skyscrapers ... old massive churches ... Central Park ... areas by the Hudson ... 

 

the new transportation hub near the WTC (World Trade Center) is especially a sight 

 

one of the few areas we avoid is ironically one of the more well known areas :  Times Square

I live within 15 miles of NYC. Worked there basically my whole professional life until the last years when I traveled a lot but still made the city my base. Even on weekends spent lots of time there going to museums, Broadway shows , etc... It is one of my favorite places to be in although all the other places are totally different from it. One really has to know it and spend time there to appreciate it. Although sadly today it is not so, it is constantly  alive and full of life, the people in it being its greatest asset. Incredibly, regardless of what you may want and look for you will find it here. People are usually intimidated by its size and population but they shouldn't. Of course there are always exceptions specially when one considers the population numbers, but  I have been to a lot of places in this Country and abroad and can with certainty say that it is perhaps one of the very few places on earth that you can be in,and you will fit right in. It does not matter what, who, race,religion nor whether you are glowing purple, you will not be gazed at, singled out but you will fit right in. You can be who you are and just live your life plain and simple.

All well said Caz, not just what I quote.

 

The part that I sectioned out above is a great description for Portland Maine and the surrounding area. I'm a country boy as most of you well know by nature and I'd really rather be sitting in the middle of a hundred acres with no neighbors visible. But if one is into small cities or big towns or whatever you'd like to call it, Portland is a great place to be.
