Also, I was going to replace the fuel line but I am wondering if this is a factory formed line? I can't tell if it is or if it is just old and kind of froze in the position it has been in for the last 50 years. Pullstart 62,785 #32 Posted April 26, 2020 Here’s some more proof that a round hood can pull plow. Putt Putt has an 8 hp Kohler and 8 speed transmission. One way or another, he’ll get a limited slip diff ‘fore too long as well. the last pic is Jim, he’s over in WI. Hosts a mean plow day where we turned about 17 acres last fall. Hopefully I can get the jack in the box back together lol probably over 20 years since I had one of those pull start assemblies apart the housing was loose on the engine - and pawls on the pull start would barely engage unless pulled quickly so I rarely got a good quality pull - but with the Kohler it barely mattered - barely needed a 1/4 pull and it would start ( and I rarely changed the plug and never touched the points ) when reassembling clean the threads of the small retaining bolt and apply loctite before tightening *** - the pawls should then engage better ( *** I believe 50 - 75 inch pounds ? ) Edited April 28, 2020 by tom2p Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Pullstart 62,785 #41 Posted May 4, 2020 Have you gotten the recoil functional? What kind of shape is the carb in and do you have spark? If the carb is removed and cleaned, all passageways cleaned out to pull fuel from the bowl to the venturi, then I’d feed it fuel from an exterior source unless the fuel line has been replaced. Checking for spark is easy. Pull the plug and ground it to the head while pulling the engine over. Key on of course... if no spark, take a look at the points on the cover near the right front corner of the frame. They are spring loaded and have two pucks that contact each other. If you have a skinny file you can place the file between them and clean them up a bit. Use a dollar bill folded in half to clean the points when you’re done. SAND PAPER will do more long term damage than good by leaving scratches for contaminates to hold on to and burn the points again. If you have feeler gauges, they should open .018” to .020” when you slowly roll the engine over. After checking those settings, check for spark again. With a clean carb and good spark, it should be ready to fire up! 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Hoythunter25 46 #44 Posted May 10, 2020 Guys I am having some trouble getting this recoil/starter to work properly. I put it back together last night and pretty sure I have it all correct but it doesn't seem to engage very good at all and when it does it seems like the little dogs are slipping on the inside teeth of the cog on the engine. Check for continuity between the screw on the points wire and ground. wait a minute.. what is rolling the engine over?
