would love to know what that hitch was built to pull.  Looks like a plintel hitch in reverse.  It won’t take much to remove all that have what you need to operate ground engaging rear implements.

Probably could tell a story or two. I am missing the bars/cables needed to operate the front and rear implements.

Is there any spec charts that include what spark plug? Plug gap? Oil type? Air filter? Etc...

Also, I was going to replace the fuel line but I am wondering if this is a factory formed line? I can't tell if it is or if it is just old and kind of froze in the position it has been in for the last 50 years. Has anyone replaced with regular fuel line that you can purchased at the hardware store?

1/4” low pressure fuel line is just fine.  I keep a 50’ coil of it.  Well, I did.  Just ran out last week!

Here’s some more proof that a round hood can pull plow.  Putt Putt has an 8 hp Kohler and 8 speed transmission.  One way or another, he’ll get a limited slip diff ‘fore too long as well.

the last pic is Jim, he’s over in WI.  Hosts a mean plow day where we turned about 17 acres last fall.  I had him take a parade lap on Putt Putt while we were out there.

We have a 704 - our first Wheel Horse

acquired it around 1974 - used it on a regular basis until the late 90's - still have it (stuffed in garage)

implements (for sale) for this tractor including mower deck and plow at one point were almost impossible to find ... pre-internet / pre Wheel Horse club days ... but after years of searching I found another mower deck

had a number of great muscle cars and motorcycles - all eventually sold as I moved along through the different phases of life - but the 704 remains !

Couple bikes too.

I like bikes.

I only have like 11....

those bikes followed me !

can barely see a plow frame to the right - buried behind bikes ... will need to do some shuffling so I can use the plow !

I went and got some essential supplies for trying to get her started. I also started trying to put back together the original starter. Hopefully I can get the jack in the box back together lol

Here is what we have for the 704. 26 results on 2 pages and they are in no particular order so look through them all.

Hi Guys,

I just picked up my first wheel horse today for a lockdown project. I don't know a whole lot about these tractors. I am hoping this is a good source to learn. Is there a good source for parts that anyone can share? I was told this is a 1967 704, is there a serial number chart to verify? It has a 7hp k161 kohler motor. What do you guys think about the purchase?

That tractor is in excellent condition for the year! Those round-hoods with the large rear tires are probably one of my favorite!

Fight the urge to spray-bomb that unless you are going to do a full on resto. That thing would clean up NICE as an original.

probably over 20 years since I had one of those pull start assemblies apart

the housing was loose on the engine - and pawls on the pull start would barely engage unless pulled quickly so I rarely got a good quality pull - but with the Kohler it barely mattered - barely needed a 1/4 pull and it would start

( and I rarely changed the plug and never touched the points )

when reassembling clean the threads of the small retaining bolt and apply loctite before tightening *** - the pawls should then engage better

( *** I believe 50 - 75 inch pounds ? )

What parts do you have already?

General maintenance and tune stuff of course.

Transmission shifter boot and oil.

Have you gotten the recoil functional?  What kind of shape is the carb in and do you have spark?  If the carb is removed and cleaned, all passageways cleaned out to pull fuel from the bowl to the venturi, then I’d feed it fuel from an exterior source unless the fuel line has been replaced.  Checking for spark is easy.  Pull the plug and ground it to the head while pulling the engine over.  Key on of course...  if no spark, take a look at the points on the cover near the right front corner of the frame.  They are spring loaded and have two pucks that contact each other.  If you have a skinny file you can place the file between them and clean them up a bit.  Use a dollar bill folded in half to clean the points when you’re done.  SAND PAPER will do more long term damage than good by leaving scratches for contaminates to hold on to and burn the points again.  If you have feeler gauges, they should open .018” to .020” when you slowly roll the engine over.  After checking those settings, check for spark again.  With a clean carb and good spark, it should be ready to fire up!

I have a Kohler carb kit, new spark plug, new fuel line, and new recoil rope. I will hopefully habe everything cleaned up and installed today. Does this engine have points?

Does have points. Yes. Just clean the ones you have.

Points file is best. Sandpaper can leave behind residual stuff.

You'll be  headed the right direction there.

Guys I am having some trouble getting this recoil/starter to work properly. I put it back together last night and pretty sure I have it all correct but it doesn't seem to engage very good at all and when it does it seems like the little dogs are slipping on the inside teeth of the cog on the engine. Any help or thoughts?

I don't seem to be getting spark....check out this video, do these points seem correct? I also found this bad spot in the wire that goes to the ignition toggle switch. Any thoughts?

There is a possibility that the condenser is bad. Also if the ignition switch isn't working it could cause it to not have spark.

Do you have a multi meter?  Roll it over by hand and have the key on.  Check for continuity between the screw on the points wire and ground.

wait a minute.. what is rolling the engine over?  I thought this was a recoil machine?
