Hoythunter25 46 #1 Posted April 26, 2020 Hi Guys, I just picked up my first wheel horse today for a lockdown project. I don't know a whole lot about these tractors. I am hoping this is a good source to learn. Is there a good source for parts that anyone can share? I was told this is a 1967 704, is there a serial number chart to verify? It has a 7hp k161 kohler motor. What do you guys think about the purchase? 7 7
ebinmaine 67,267 #2 Posted April 26, 2020 I'm not super familiar with the earlier models but if it's a 704 it's a 1964. Decent lookin rig!!

Achto 27,502 #9 Posted April 26, 2020 Congratulations!!! It definitely looks like you purchased a 704. The year of that tractor will be 1964. There is one of those on my bucket list yet.

Pullstart 62,785 #11 Posted April 26, 2020 @Hoythunter25! I believe @FAST is in Midland as well. I love me some round hoods, even the cobwebbed ones!

Hoythunter25 46 #13 Posted April 26, 2020 So I believe this tractor has some sort of hitch mount that moves up and own? Can anyone fill me in on how that works? What is supposed to move it up and down? I think I may be missing some linkage or parts? Looks like previous owner welded a strap on this one to make it solid. I have aspirations of getting a single bottom plow and turning over a garden.

Pullstart 62,785 #15 Posted April 26, 2020 Your lift arm on the left side moves two arms inside that dash tower. One pulls up for snow plows, grader blades, mower decks, etc. the other moves forward to push a snowplow off the ground or pull the lift cable forward. It goes between the transmission and the tool box area just left of your seat spring to lift the rear hitch too. @wheelhorseman at www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com makes new cables tougher than stock, with a sleeve to sandwich in that tube area above the transmission.
953 nut 55,065 #16 Posted April 26, 2020 Looks like a very nice barn find there. Please ask questions as you go along, we are here to help. This manual should help. Here is an illustration of the rocker shaft @pullstart was talking about.
WHNJ701 4,165 #17 Posted April 26, 2020 there is a lot of techniques and posts on here to preserve that original finish, aside from the replacement pullstart it looks very original. that tractor should polish up great

First of all to the best Wheel Horse resource on the planet—not only because of the manuals, restorations, and instructive threads but mainly because of all the great guys who have acquired so much knowledge through the years and are willing to share it. That is a great little tractor. My son @Coulter Caleb purchased an 854 (8hp, electric start, 1964 model) and has already done some plowing with it. Can they plow? He did however still have it and gave it to me. Initial inspection the original seems to be functioning, just needs wound back up and a new rope/handle.

tom2p 2,394 #25 Posted April 26, 2020 (edited) We have a 704 - our first Wheel Horse acquired it around 1974 - used it on a regular basis until the late 90's - still have it (stuffed in garage) implements (for sale) for this tractor including mower deck and plow at one point were almost impossible to find ... pre-internet / pre Wheel Horse club days ... but after years of searching I found another mower deck had a number of great muscle cars and motorcycles - all eventually sold as I moved along through the different phases of life - but the 704 remains !
