Help needed with 417A PTO

Recommended Posts

CombatMicah

Hi all,

New to the forum and I couldn't find what I was looking for with a quick search so I'm posting my issue. I have a 417A with the original mower deck and I keep losing RPM on the blades when I even hit the smallest patch of thicker grass or sometimes for no reason at all.

What I have done so far:

1) New Clutch plate

2) New belts on Mower deck, drive and deck drive

3) Hours of making adjustments to gaps, tensions and trial and error and always the same result.

My question is how do I pin point what is slipping?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome.  Put a piece of colored tape on the PTO bell.  Blue) That will give you a visual reference to see if it slows down during the slipping period.  If it does  tighten the trunion on the end of the PTO engagement rod.(Yellow).

The mule drive belt should be tightened to where you on can push down on the belt 1/2" between engine ans mule drive.   There is a chance that the drive pulley in the deck is slipping.

There is also a spring that tighten the belt on the deck if the slide on the deck is rusted  the deck belt could be too loose.

The tensioneron the deck for the deck belt may not be doing it's job.  It might Ned cleaning/lubrication.

Good luck.

At # 2, when you put a new belt on deck, did you see that the spring-loaded BELT TENSION ARM was free to float in the guides.  It MUST be free to float or the Left / Right spindles will slip a lot. This is common.  Be sure there is no debris or rust build-up under that flat IDLER bar.
