Milling a head .020”?

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would try a comparison piece for different machined surface finishes.

This was a bit of a rushed job but it gives an idea of how different cutters will give finer surface finishes.

If I was going for the best possible machined surface it would be surface ground.

Then it would be mirror polishing like I do for my knife making.

You can mill the head .050 and still be ok, but totally doable for .020. Pulling guys will even mill LP heads on stock tractors. As long as you don't go past the combustion chamber.

I have a cub that I pulled in the stock class, and it is bone stock. The difference between a stock head and one milled .040 is something you can feel in the seat of the pants and being most of us run no ethanol fuel that has a little extra octane, is a no brainer for me. I still use that motor for normal stuff with my cub since I don't pull anymore and do not notice it running any hotter than it did. Now I don't spend all day plowing with it, but I would still do that if I could find someplace to do some plowing!
