With any luck an adjustment will do the trick.
Pullstart 62,786 #27 Posted April 23, 2020 Here’s a video I did trying to remove that pesky broken bolt! 2

Pullstart 62,786 #30 Posted April 24, 2020 So I got the hole drilled and tapped, the block is cleaned up, now time to clean up the head! You can tell by the head gasket marks that remain after some initial flat plate wet sanding... Yep, it’s warped!
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #31 Posted April 24, 2020 Get it done!! They sound so good when running. Something about those 953 Kohlers👍

Pullstart 62,786 #33 Posted April 24, 2020 I started a thread in the engines section in regards to milling the head. Click here to see the thread and add any input you might have. I’d like to leave the comments in that thread in relation to the engine side of the work.

Pullstart 62,786 #35 Posted April 24, 2020 Rebel’s a runner! He spits more fuel out the pump to carb line than any big block Kohler could consume! I’ll work on fixing that issue next! 1
Pullstart 62,786 #37 Posted April 25, 2020 I could buy a new starter switch. But I really want to see what’s making it fail. Water and time look like they did a number. I’ll clean this up, give it some dielectric grease and give ‘Er a whirl!
Pullstart 62,786 #40 Posted April 25, 2020 BIG ‘OLE DIFFERENCE!
D_Mac 8,593 #41 Posted April 25, 2020 Sounds really nice. Good running engine now.

I’ll see if I have another one in any tighter condition. The throttle and choke butterflies have close to 3/16” play in every direction!
PeacemakerJack 10,738 #43 Posted April 25, 2020 Thanks for taking apart that starter button and posting the results. The one on Rusty (my 1054A) still seems to work good although it looks really rough. Kudos on getting that motor running, yet another step closer to a “Mule”!!! 1

I was curious more than anything and even if I broke it trying to get it apart I was going to see the guts! It’s amazing what kind of abuse and neglect these things will take! The engine had water in it and I flushed it a few times tonight with clean used oil and a splash of diesel before running for 5 minutes or so and draining one last time. I topped it back off with non-detergent 30 Weight and a cup or so of Lucas oil additive.
Mickwhitt 4,584 #45 Posted April 25, 2020 Hi Kevin, Nice work so far, love the name, it will always remind you of the lockdown and what we are all going through. Also that some things are just more important than this PITA virus I am breaking quarantine every now and then to do community stuff, I might borrow your ninja outfit lol Mick
Pullstart 62,786 #46 Posted April 26, 2020 I made a pick up of a GT-14 and a couple other things this morning. The tractor is for a friend’s kids. This was part of my package I picked up. A set of 953 inside wheel weights! I believe I need 4 more bolts and lug nuts to complete the set. These bolt onto the inside of the 953 hub, then act as lug studs for the wheels. To say I’m excited is an understatement!
Pullstart 62,786 #47 Posted April 26, 2020 @19richie66 @953 nut @Aldon Can this fan gear steering setup from a GT-14 replace a Ross steering gear on a 953 as a bolt in swap? Is it any stronger?

You went out of your way to help someone else and that “good karma” came back around already. Dad is running a set on Clyde that I got years ago on a parts Gt-14. They are awesome weights for sure. Nice haul! 1

19richie66 17,500 #50 Posted April 26, 2020 I believe you can run the fan gear instead but you may have to remove the ross mount and drill the holes for the pivot shaft. Can’t just run out and look at mine. Wrenched my leg .
