Nice! Kinda regret selling my 1054 a few years back.
How did it get that name?

I’m sure @953 nut Richard will be able to chime in with some real information for y’all and me, but I noticed this has the Ross steering box.  Indications of early 953, right?  It sure takes a few spins of the wheel to get it changing direction!

I grabbed this wiring diagram and will trace everything to make sure we’re good to go.

Found a pinched wire...  good thing I’m starting from ground zero before hooking up the juice!

The cardboard or leather isolators on the starter button were falling apart.  A chunk from an empty oil jug and a little punch action and I have new isolators!

I need to get this ugly screw out and replace it along with the terminal end, then wiring looks functional!

If I can find a tap to fit this screw from a welder plug accessory, I’ll drill and tap the tab.

I got the tab drilled out and tapped to #8-32.  It rolls over, no spark.  The points gap looks very small.  I’ll file them and set to .018 and see how it does.

Rebel is gonna make another great “Draft Horse” in the RS community!  It is a fun challenge to work through the “kinks” of a new to you machine.  There is a real level of satisfaction when you have it up and running like it should be!  Can’t wait to see this one in person someday in the near future.

Doing a good job so far. I always like working on those starter /gen tractors. So simple by design.

Yours is a second generation 953. The first generation (1.000 or so) had a unique steering wheel and recessed headlights (which were leftover HL-22 units sold as an accessory in '62). The second generation retained the Ross steering box, but used the same steering wheel that continued on to the third generation when the "Fan Gear" steering emerged. This steering wheel and the new headlight (actually a Deitz tail light with a clear lens) was continued on the 1054 and 1054A

The first thing to check on the steering is the bolts that hold the steering gear in place, if they are not tight it will wander. If it is in need of a rebuild I think Lowell sells a kit for them. Several :techie-ebay: sellers have them under the Ross or Cub Cadet heading.

I was looking at the box last night from between the battery box and S/G and see that the bolts are tight, but the guts seem to move around quite a bit.

Wins and losses...

It pumps fuel!

Everything leaks fuel!

I got a little “puff” out the exhaust once!

That’s when I noticed the head gasket is blown and the exhaust port head bolt is snapped!

I’ll get to fixin’ on pulling the head to inspect the broken bolt situation.  I have a brand new set of easy outs and the associated drill bits too, so I’ll see about extracting the broken piece or maybe block everything off and TIG weld a nut to the stud if possible.

If I wreck the block, which I doubt it’ll come to... I was just talking about that 16 horse in Chief finding a new home soon... maybe we’ll have a 1653?

I forgot to mention also, the starter button is very touchy.  I am planning on pulling it to see how hard it comes apart.  I’d like to clean up the guts rather than replace it with something new and shiney.

All the head bolts were just snug.  No wonder it was leaking!  It’s a .020 piston that looks like it has gobbled a nut before.  The cylinder doesn’t look terrible... that’s good!  I have enough of a stud sticking out that I plan to TIG weld a nut to it and see what happens.

Tractorhead

It‘s a Cast iron Head i guess, i would preheat it a bit with a blowtorch before welding a nut on the bolt.

Otherwise quick welding temp differences can eventually crack the cast iron arround and destroy the cylinder.

Looks it also shows a please for some flexhone Action.

i see no signs of a crosshatch in the Pics.

Just a suggest
