Pullstart 62,785 #5 Posted April 22, 2020 I’m sure @953 nut Richard will be able to chime in with some real information for y’all and me, but I noticed this has the Ross steering box. Indications of early 953, right? It sure takes a few spins of the wheel to get it changing direction! There is a real level of satisfaction when you have it up and running like it should be! The first generation (1.000 or so) had a unique steering wheel and recessed headlights (which were leftover HL-22 units sold as an accessory in '62). The second generation retained the Ross steering box, but used the same steering wheel that continued on to the third generation when the "Fan Gear" steering emerged. This steering wheel and the new headlight (actually a Deitz tail light with a clear lens) was continued on the 1054 and 1054A The first thing to check on the steering is the bolts that hold the steering gear in place, if they are not tight it will wander. If it is in need of a rebuild I think Lowell sells a kit for them. Several sellers have them under the Ross or Cub Cadet heading. 2 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Pullstart 62,785 #20 Posted April 23, 2020 Wins and losses... It pumps fuel! Everything leaks fuel! I got a little “puff” out the exhaust once! That’s when I noticed the head gasket is blown and the exhaust port head bolt is snapped! I’ll get to fixin’ on pulling the head to inspect the broken bolt situation. I have a brand new set of easy outs and the associated drill bits too, so I’ll see about extracting the broken piece or maybe block everything off and TIG weld a nut to the stud if possible. If I wreck the block, which I doubt it’ll come to... I was just talking about that 16 horse in Chief finding a new home soon... maybe we’ll have a 1653? 1 4 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Pullstart 62,785 #24 Posted April 23, 2020 All the head bolts were just snug. No wonder it was leaking! It’s a .020 piston that looks like it has gobbled a nut before. The cylinder doesn’t look terrible... that’s good! I have enough of a stud sticking out that I plan to TIG weld a nut to it and see what happens. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Tractorhead 9,064 #25 Posted April 23, 2020 It‘s a Cast iron Head i guess, i would preheat it a bit with a blowtorch before welding a nut on the bolt. Otherwise quick welding temp differences can eventually crack the cast iron arround and destroy the cylinder.
