A couple planned changes coming for Pullstart Stables (that’s got a nice ring to it!)

So after pulling the tractors out last weekend, I realized Chief and Big Junky are both tractors that I shouldn’t let anyone drive.  The motion controls are sloppy, steering is sloppy, just not safe when children are very often a mix in my tractor world.  They both run great and would be better off as donors to make other tractors run happy.  

 

First, Big Junky the 1076 will be stripped of his engine for Scoop the C-161 black hood.  We have some friends looking for an affordable entry into plowing at the farm for their kids.  I’m planning on looking at a GT-14 package soon and plan to have Scoop and the better GT-14 prepped to go to their greener pastures.  I introduced on of the kids not too long ago, he’s the 14 year old running a beef farm.  He’s up to 30 something head of cattle and is a big John Deere fan... up until he saw our Wheel Horses ❤️ 

 

As for the other GT-14, I believe it’s a mostly complete basket case other than an engine.  Chief’s 16 horse Kohler will be a perfect candidate for that project!

You could part them out or. or, maybe these tractors would make good candidates for the girls to learn how to repair a worn out tractor. Just a thought, not talking about a full resto maybe just a mechanical resto. Course I'm into resurrecting junk

Strikes me as appropriate that your must noble tractor - the Black Hood - should go to a beef operation... Maybe change the name to Angus...

We have a couple other tractors like Rylee’s 1076 “Filly” that could benefit from a mechanical resto as well.  I am thinking it sure would be cool to do an articulating hydro some day... so a lot of components could be used to keep other less-junkish tractors moving and have custom plans too.

Interested in seeing the 161 when done. I miss having the black hood on mine but it won't fit the 2 stage blower.  Had to convert it to a later 300 plus series hood.

Because this black hood uses the old style C series dash for this year only, I might put a C-101 hood on to keep the hood with the Briggs.  We’ll see how it goes - I haven’t compared front mounts yet.

Yes that is a nice feature. I had to change the top half of the dash on mine to use the later hood. 

 

This fiberglass good mounts on a weird bracket and sticks way forward of the front of the tractor.

@pullstart Does any of this have to do with a little bit of Big Show Cancellation withdraws? 

I know I am really bummed out. My project was 75% just needing paint and pushed it on the side.

Don't let the lack of a Big Show get ya down.

Finish the tractor for your own gratification.

@TractorJunkie not at all.  I am bummed about the Big Show for sure, but life will go on with the tractors.  I just need to make a little room for projects that friends and family can enjoy too.  Both of the tractors I’m parting out are beat to death and back and we’re probably cheaper than just buying an engine.

Hey not exactly hiding the razor blades but I would say more disappointed then anything. I am going to finish it, just waiting now for warmer weather, much easier to paint.

I realized Big Junky and Scoop were next to each other.  I started taking measurements and comparing differences.

 

The Kohler is mounted direct to the frame with a tall oil pan.  It is 1/2” shorter to the crank than the Briggs.  The PTO systems are different and the C series utilizes the shaker plate for the bell hoop.  I have a C-101 Kohler shaker plate and shorter oil pan.  Does anyone know if the pans will swap, or does the deep pan Kohler have a longer dipper?

I might just find myself re-reading the big block oil pan sticky...

 

I’m not against adapting the old style PTO rod to the C series horse either, if that needs to be done.

I believe the shaker style pans are the narrow base while bolt to frame are the wide.  I dont believe you can swap them over from a shaker to wide because of bolt pattern. That said I asked a little bit ago and most seem to use spacers without the shaker.
