Were the 2 gears (the reduction gear and the pinion gear) on top of the cluster gear and splined shafts even to the touch??? If yes, I would take an arbor and give the bearing for the splined shaft in the left side case a tap to give it a touch more head space. The bearing for the brake shaft (left side case) should be flush with the outside of the case. Give that one a tap also. Those adjustments should do it for you. Might as well put the dunce cap on me for this ...another where was my head what was I thinking moments - it helps things go together if you don't put the wrong ( 1518 ) bearing where the 1542 is supposed to go Had those new 1518 bearings laying on a shop towel noticed I didn't look close enough the one was shorter ...at that point it hit me ...the base of the 1518 was high enough in the case to bottom out the shaft and bind everything up .. the crack in the spline shaft was the cause of the chatter . All back together with no noise ....took it for a spin back in business .
stevasaurus 22,863 #27 Posted May 9, 2020 The difference of 1/16". Glad you found it. You always learn more when things go wrong. I have had a few that you call it a night, lay there thinking about it for hours...come up with something to check out and then can't wait for the morning. Walking away and giving it some thought is one of the best lines of advice one can get. Outstanding.

Checking these transmissions after they're together before bolting them back on the tractor are also words to live by . ...
