Dan.gerous 2,696 #1 Posted April 22, 2020 My second wheelhorse is all kitted up with it's rototiller and ready to make gardens. As the machine and implement are new to me I thought it best to do a fluid change before we start the heavy work. What oil do I need for the tiller? While I'm at it, what does the C125 need in its gearbox and engine? Thanks in advance for any advice.
ebinmaine 67,307 #2 Posted April 22, 2020 Not sure about the rototiller gearbox but the engine probably wants straight 30 HD detergent oil. I'm assuming your transmission is an 8-speed? If that's the case just pick up some 80w 90. 2 quarts. if you haven't already done so order up a shift boot. That's probably dry and cracked. If you're changing the gear oil in a manual transmission you should try to get the front of the tractor as high off the ground as you can safely do so because there is a bump in the base of the transmission that will hold gear oil in a pool. if what you drain out of their looks a lot like coffee with too much creamer or liquid caramel, you may want to do a flush with either diesel fuel or kerosene. Driving around 4 a bit and drop that stuff out and put the nice new clean gear oil in. 5

Thanks, I had the seat and rear unit of today and noticed the shift boot is ruined, same in both machines so I'm guessing the oil is going to be a bit milky! Both my machines lived outside, but now they are always under cover. 1

Do that flush like I said with the diesel or k1 and you'll clean that transmission right out fairly well.

Will dip into the farms red diesel tank for the flush!

pfrederi 17,674 #8 Posted April 22, 2020 If you aren't tilling big acreage I would just go with what ever gear oil you have.

It's almost impossible to visit big hardware stores, not sure if any of the automotive places are open either. Will have to do some online research, or use eBay or similar and get it mail ordered.

Herder 2,354 #13 Posted April 22, 2020 I may get scolded for this but, here's what happened and what I did about it. After filling the gearbox with 90-140 and a quick test run I parked her the shop. The next day I found the oil all over the shop floor!! I was pi$$ed.And out came the grease gun!! One tube of grease and about a half quart of 90-140. No more leaks. The moral of the story is, make sure the gearbox holds oil and if it leaks fill it with grease. 2
Dan.gerous 2,696 #14 Posted April 23, 2020 Messing about today, getting rid of nails holding bits together and putting the brakes back on I noticed that my tiller attachment seems different to standard. There was a long bolt on the chain that was slowly eating into the plastic fuel tank and I had to do a few more alterations to get everything to lead through the tunnel without touching. It looks like there should be a steel bar rather than a chain. Also noticed the gearbox oil is looking a bit milky.... 14 hours ago, roadapples said:

lynnmor 7,302 #16 Posted April 23, 2020 (edited) Your chain should look like these:chain Only one row of links go in there and the long link connects. Edited April 23, 2020 by lynnmor
c-series don 8,666 #17 Posted April 23, 2020 (edited) I’ve never seen that piece that your chain is attached to. I know it may not be correct but I have always just run a cable from the rockshaft out to a small length of chain to the tiller. There was a bolt that was about an inch too long up at the wire end that was digging into the tank. I put in a shorter bit and clearance is now fine. Also stole a spring off the trampoline to help lighten the lift, it makes a reasonable difference.

I might single it up for a cleaner run a bit more like yours, at the moment the chain is doubled back.

Now I'm inside for the evening had a look again at your pictures, I see what you mean about the extra bit on mine. I'm going to remove it tomorrow as all it does is bend the pipe bracket that the lift wire goes through due to a bad lead - any mechanical advantage can only be minimal for making lifting easier. The while setup should look a lot better - will post updated pics in the morning.

Where the chain mounts on your tiller someone before you must have added the extra piece of metal to get a higher lift... The chain actually attaches to the bottom hole you show there with a small clevis... If I remember when I get home I'll get a pic of my set up.

The way it is now is putting a lot of stress on the mounting plate, will get rid of that extra bit for sure.
