troutbum70 857 #1 Posted April 22, 2020 Anyone have done or knowledge of putting electric power steering on a ford 8n, this is already converted to 12 volts. Just asking what's in tailed and possible cost.
pfrederi 17,711 #2 Posted April 22, 2020 Interesting thought... I always thought my brothers 8N steered pretty easy at least compared to my Case VAC https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=nboard&th=1018741 http://jacksonpowersteering.com/tag/ford-8n/
bottjernat1 2,190 #3 Posted April 22, 2020 (edited) Our 52 8n steered pretty good. interesting idea. i will be interested in what ideas folk come up with. SHould also put a flathead in it! Now there is an awesome idea! Edited April 22, 2020 by bottjernat1
8ntruck 6,998 #4 Posted April 22, 2020 That is an interesting thought. It would have to go on the steering wheel shaft somewhere. Not much room between the steering box, battery, and dashboard, so finding room may be an issue. As for the flathead V8 idea . Dual open stacks. Ought to sound great when you are out bush hogging.
pacer 3,169 #5 Posted April 22, 2020 OK, I added EPS to a 4wd Mitsubishi 1650, bout the same size as your 8N........ Heres a link to the site that got me started in that direction, it is VERY long with multiple posts but there is a LOT of info there. Scroll down to post 28, thats where I briefly describe what I did. But do read thru all the posts because there are added info all thru it. I started out trying the Saturn sys, but met with WAY to much frustration and switched over to end up with Hyundai unit which has now been on for some 2 yrs and is working beautifully -- this little mitsu has a frt loader and with a bucket full of dirt it was a nightmare to steer. https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspension-brakes/1848775-35-electric-power-steering-fail-safe-no-ebay-module-no-caster-issues-2.html

They also had a 6cyl conversion on the market. https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2017/08/04/funk-conversion-brought-power-to-the-people I like the electric power steering idea. It would be real nice to have if you have a FEL on it.
ebinmaine 67,409 #7 Posted April 22, 2020 Not quite the same tractor but on our Ferguson te20 it would be real nice to have power steering. I'll check out the above posts. Thanks. I've been up close and personal to a couple of different 8Ns with small flat-head 8s. Husband and wife pair. Husband pulled with his. Wife liked hers to be more for show. Interesting rigs for sure. troutbum70 857 #8 Posted April 22, 2020 Ok guys thank you for a couple links, we purchased an 8n with an FEL and with me only full function with one arm getting around with it is very difficult, which we new would be a problem for a couple of us. It is just worse than we anticipated. At $ 1,200.00 hunded dollars we hated to not grab it. And removing the FEL and reinstalling would also be quite a task. Just thought maybe someone on the square had already done one.
troutbum70 857 #9 Posted April 22, 2020 Also there used to be at one time a couple folks in my area with N series tractors with flat head 8's, which came from factory set up that way. And I know a couple others that had made the conversion.
8ntruck 6,998 #10 Posted April 22, 2020 (edited) 8N with a FEL for $1200. Heck of a deal. You were right to grab it. Power steering on it would make sense. EB - follow along with this. Adding power steering to your Furgson should be about the same. Re: flathead V8 conversion - Got to remember the transmission was only designed for the 28 hp four. More horsepower put anead of it will make it easier to break. Edited April 22, 2020 by 8ntruck

It's getting fairly popular to add electric steering to older cars. I had a Saturn Ion that I gave $100 for with a bad CVT. I thought about trying to adapt the electric steering from it to something else, and maybe put the EcoTec out of it in a dune buggy. Had a guy that just had to have the thing though so I sold it.
troutbum70 857 #12 Posted April 23, 2020 Tnx for a couple ideas of places to research for possible improved steering on the old ferd.
Pullstart 62,834 #13 Posted April 24, 2020 Yep, I’ve heard Saturn EPS units are common to use for buggies. I imagine it would be just as effective in a tractor! Maybe it would work on a FEL equipped ?
Cvans 1,009 #14 Posted April 24, 2020 I looked into doing this on our Ford 850 with a loader. The issue that came up was the amount of current the steering unit used when turning the wheel a lot. I have a Mitsubishi MT2201 with a loader and never have felt the steering to be very hard unless setting still with a full loader. Mine is 2wd. The 850 Ford on the other hand is a bear with less than 40lbs of air in the tires. Here is another option. I worked with them when installing a live hydraulic pump on the front of the Ford. Very good people to deal with. http://jacksonpowersteering.com/
troutbum70 857 #15 Posted April 24, 2020 Tnx Cvans I have sent Jackson power steering an email for information. This does have a FEL and has live hydraulics running off front of engine, so that may simplify putting power steering on it. I only have one fully functioning arm, my brother has had a half dozen back surgerys. So that thing is a struggle for either one of us.
Tractorhead 9,064 #16 Posted April 24, 2020 The idea to use the available Hydraulic System also for steering purposes make on a Tractor with FEL or Hydraulic pump absolutely sense. A EPS System drops between 30-60 Amps of Current, what will normally supported by the Electric charging System. If a smaller genny/ regulator system is given, that can bring you on small areas with a lot of steering quick in troubles, if no enough Charging current is given, the system can Fail than. If hydraulic System is allready attached, it‘s simpler to add a powersteering on that source. just my 2 cents
troutbum70 857 #17 Posted April 25, 2020 Yes the FEL has its own hydro pump, which provides full range of motion for bucket also and down pressure. So it should be able to handle the steering as well. Tnx for you input tractorhead
Cvans 1,009 #18 Posted April 25, 2020 Roland will give you the straight advice. He's a good guy. Fun to see operators in his videos turn the wheel with one finger. Not cheap but the results are excellent and he stands behind what he sells. Good luck with your project.
