Replacing tires on a Wheelhorse 520H

Hi! 

 

Greetings from Maine.

 

In searching for information on replacement tires on my 520H (it has original tires,  now weather cracked, about 30 years old on it) I found this forum.

 

I found some older threads, but nothing newer, so wanted to ask for input.  I am looking for inexpensive but decent quality tires all the way around.  I am debating on going with turf tires, as it has, or possibly going with 'ag' style tires on the rear, and 'ribbed' tires on front.

 

My mowing includes lawn around the house, but also around some apple trees (not really an orchard, yet), and occasionally mowing down some raspberry bushes.  So, I am not sure the ag tires are needed, but they do look good.   But, I don't want to tear up our lawn...

Hello Bob and 

Tires on a 520 as most tractors came untubed so tubing them can make them hold air again. If the treads are still good this is a good economy option. 

If the treads are shot or sidewalls torn or really bad or you just don't like the look of the checking tires should be replaced. 

Sounds to me like you should stay with turfs for what you are using it for unless you have traction issues and mow on on steeper inclines. That said any turf tire in multiple brands in 23/10.50/12 would suit your needs. Otherwise the tires like Sparkey has, who sometimes needs to be reminded of his manners in welcoming newbies, are a good crossover to ags.

I shouldn't really answer about tires on grass because welp...... We ain't got any worth caring for.

 

Our horses are more for forest and yard use where tread marks don't matter.

BTW Bob most of us that have larger herds or already have more money stuck into them than the missus knows about usually shop on line. Best deals and right to your door. Ther is a list here  that Mr dumb phone can post a to that provides a link to suppliers we have all used and approve.

I have Hi Runs on one tractor and Carlisle Turf Masters on the other. Both perform well. Both standard turf treads.

 

I prefer the Carlisle’s though. Seem to hold better and have a smoother ride.

to    I am a big Carlisle fan because of looks and longevity and have had great luck with the Turfs for three seasons and add 2 link chains and wheel weights for Winter and they work well for me. I would like a set of those All Trails on one of my tractors someday  that @Sparky  runs on his WorkHorse because they look just Awesome.

Thank you for the input so far!  Here's another question- are there any other wheels that would fit the rear of the 520H?  The thought I have here is having both turf and ag rear tire sets.  But, I don't know how much the wheels are.

 

I hadn't thought of using ATV tires.

 

Regarding the condition of the tires- I know the front tires have tubes, not sure about the rear, but the cracking is evident enough that I am not sure I will make it through the summer with them.  Plus, the rubber has 'hardened', or feels like it, so in the couple of wet spots we can have (not year round, but in spring or after a rain) they just spin.  So, I would fee safer, especially if the wife is going to operate it, with new(er) tires.  The All Trails look nice, but seem to be more expensive.

 

There was mention of a link to approved suppliers- where can I find that?

We'll get you that link Bob. Rims are cheap and plenty available off parts 520s but not sure in your area. Your want to move just down the road from me you would have an extra set already!

I've seen Deeston, Kenda, Carlisle, Hi-Run, some no-names... If I got a set that would last another 30 years, that would outlive me and the 520H both, I think.  So, I'm not set on brands.

No EB ther is a link to all sorts of tire suppliers in links to suppliers here. I've run the Kenda and Carlisle.

 

Deestone makes a decent tire from what I've read but they run small.

 

Carlisle will likely be a little more expensive but are a great quality.

 

There are many online sources that'll ship free.

Super important to us in the wilds.

Yah sorry for going  Bob... it happens more often than not around here but hang with us and we'll make sure you get the tires you need/want. These times it's more important to keep your sense of humor up than anything.

I definitely have a lot to learn.

 

No problem on the jesting- I think that's par for the course in a group that has a common interest, and (typically) some respect for each other.

 

Looking at different sources, I might be able to get a set for under $200, unless I add tubes.  Plus, installation.  Where I am, it isn't quite necessary to mow, and I can use it for a little while, I think, but I want to get a plan in place.

 

Do some/most tire places do mower tires?  Or, would a specialty shop be better?  Cause I am not sure I can change them myself.  I did tube one of the front tires a couple years ago, and that was a pain.

In the 30 plus years I have been playing around with WheelHorse tractors I have only had to buy tires twice and went to a dealer to have them done. I did my own tires on dirt bikes for many years with tire irons and I would rather do what I do for a living and pay a  shop to do them , pick them up when ready and install them back on the tractor. JMO

Most places that do automotive tire should be able to take care of your rear tires. Some places in our area get a little funny if you didn't buy the tires from them but other places are good about it. If you were to do a lot of tires, a $40 Harbor Freight tire changer does a fairly good job.

My 520-H is a 1989 I went with  Carlisle Turf Master I got a good deal from "Midwest Traction" on line with free Shipping.  Mine doesn't have the wide front axle . I have  24 x 950  on the rear and 18 x 650 on the front There all 4 ply.
