Brian Peschke 0 #1 Posted April 20, 2020 Just bought a 522xi looked okay started and ran. Stored in garage behind somethings. Got it home and tried to use it and the hydrostatic drive surges and stops driving when you turn the steering wheel. I am going to change the filter and oil. Look for some insight. JoeM 7,874 #2 Posted April 20, 2020 (edited) Those have a deal called (I think they call it that) smart turn. It deactivates the hydro when in a turn to slow the machine down encase you have the cruse control on. Don't want you to roll over in a a turn. There is a slick video on YouTube show how to disable this feature pretty easily with a common bolt. Either you like it or hate it, I have one off and one on, and leaning toward off. shallowwatersailor 3,213 #4 Posted April 21, 2020 Yes, start with a new filter and fresh oil. It sounds as if the fluid level is low. The engine should be run at full throttle. Make certain that the oil level is correct. Also sometimes after you change the hydro oil it will show full but then be low again after running. Top it off. With the 522xi there is also a screen (they call it a filter) on the left side of the dash for the power steering. That may be clogged or restricting flow. Brian Peschke 0 #5 Posted April 21, 2020 Thanks to everyone, I feel silly about it. I've have a 312-8 that was given to me with 3200 hrs and the gauge quit working around 4600 about two years ago. Well it gave up the ghost last year in the fall. It needs a new carb, starter, tie rods, intake valve, second gear or shift forks and a new deck so with that said I looked for a new horse. I found 522xi it seemed cared for 657 hrs on it bring it home hence the surging. I've kind of guessed it was the smart steer because the problem gets worse when turning. I'm going to change the oil and filter and call toro for the delete kit for the smart steer. Embarrassed by the fact I work for a large toro dealer in Illinois, if I find any more info or service bulletins I will try to post.
