WHX?? 48,767 #1 Posted April 20, 2020 (edited) ….unless SWMBO orders it again! Bought this 702 from Shynon what Tom three, four years ago already? Had the duals on it and a fresh motor he had just rebuilt. He claims it was his first resto and since the paint was not perfect a good candidate for a re-paint. He also had hub caps on it but and would of sold them with the tractor had I opened my wallet a little further. 'Sides I saw no need for them on a worker. Wrong again! One of the reasons I had to have it was one of years I was missing in my collection and the year my wife was born which is one of the reasons I got away with her letting me buying it. So since it was her birth year I had to say it was "her tractor" ! Huge mistake... Well she had always wanted a candy apple red sixties vintage muscle car so I figured a cheap way out of the car was do a CA tractor and told her we would. Keep in mind I was thinking a cheap rattle can job and figured she'd eventually forget about the CA thing, boy was I wrong! Well it was a bit cheaper than the car but now that my wallet is a tad lighter IDK. The sad thing this WAS a working tractor and was a go to and one of my favorites. Still a fav but no more a working tractor. No biggy this is my argument with her on why to have more tractors! Tractor went to every show with us and still will I guess. She did everything I asked from it and then some. Only real issue with it is every once in awhile in would get stuck in two gears at once. Not a big deal as it always popped right back out with a little fiddling with the shift lever and rocking backwards. An issue I had hoped to get sorted out in this build but I failed here. It still does it but gonna have to live with it ….. it' ain't coming back apart. First some before pics.... You guys are going to think I'm nuts for doing this as these pics it looks to be a nice tractor..... it was …I am …. Thought I had some pics when I first bought it but their MIA. Met Tom, Mike, Terry M and another guy, can't remember his name, just off the I90 interstate where they was in WI to do some horse thieving & had a nice breakfast with them. Think I did a thread on it when I first bought it will have to dig it out the basement. Sry Ryan no more grand kids climbing on it and one of the reasons I don't like doing this to a tractor. Warning this thread is going to get VERY pic heavy! Last pic before..... THIS!!! Egads what did I get myself in to! Dan @Achto you were no help in instigating this! He showing her color swatches like they was picking out drapes! She did help me strip it down and actually helped quite abit on it as you shall see. Off to the blaster and time for tranny work. One nice thing about this project as no motor work was needed other than paint. One of the thoughts was the shift rails so upon orders I put flats on them to avoid stiction. Was not the answer tho. With much discussion with the tranny experts about pin lengths, detents and springs I decided installing a shift pin would not help without deeper detents. It came apart with no pin so back together it went without but new balls and spring. Since the bearings were not going to get replaced I had to strip the tranny down by hand. Probably the worst job of the whole project. Somebody had been in this thing before as evidenced by the sealer on the halfs and no gasket. Strange flaking of some chrome? plating off some replacement gears? She did get new outboard axle bearings & seals and of course dual magnetic drain plugs as long as they were in the house! That's all for today folks stay tuned tomorrow for more. Yup that's right … I is gonna make you suffer through the whole thread before the glamor shots! Sides some of us are still working and if you guys were here where you should have been instead off facebooking or surfing porn you might have seen some sneak previews! WHX?? 48,767 #13 Posted April 21, 2020 (edited) Ok some more teaseing…. The paint..… was very expensive, not exactly a 6 buck rattle can. Dan can chime in on the exact brands/colors or I can take some pics of the cans if anyone else has got the hair to do this. The whole paint scheme was thrown in his department. Was his crazy @$$ idea anyway! I was just slave labor and ball cap stripper glitter awardee.. Chime in here Dan if I'm wrong here on the exact steps. 1 Bare blasted metal 2 Self etching primer 3 Three coats of gray primer. 3a Mist the sheet metal parts with rusty primer then wet sand with 1000 grit till mist is gone. This is a real time consumer as it has to be done by hand. Two guys going at it goes quick. 4 Three coats of silver metallic. This is where I got the stripper glitter from... the stuff just hung in the air. More than one guy asked me what establishment I had visited and why I had so many dollar bills in my wallet 5 Three coats of CA red. When they were first shot a thought they looked maroon. I hate maroon. Red parts roasting over an open fire The hood... little bit of bondo but not bad. Straitening hood fins was a bit of a pain. One was stretched and had to be cut and re-welded. Could have worked on in much longer but figured it was close enough for the girls we go out with! We did miss one tiny little dent... character I says kinda got hid in the flames. Flamage…I had overheard him yakking something about this with Cindy but thought they both just on crack. This was all done by Dan by hand. Note how they seem to overlap. I don't know if I got a headache from looking at all those crazy lines or the sniffing the stripper glitter! Sure was interesting to watch him.... Yah I don't think this is his first rodeo... One of things about this paint is it looks totally different in different types of light. Some of the pics it looks orange... pops red in sunlight tho. As Elmer Fudd I stand corrected..... Porky Pig would say.... Ebadebadeba that's all folks. Tune in tomorrow same bat time same bat channel for final assembly. Pretty close Jim. 3a - We used 400grit. 6 - 3 coats of urethane clear after the candy apple red was applied. 20 hours ago, WHX24 said: Dan can chime in on the exact brands/colors or I can take some pics of the cans if anyone else has got the hair to do this. The whole paint scheme was thrown in his department. Was his crazy @$$ idea anyway! No Jim, this was Cindy's idea,... after I showed her some pics of bikes that I had painted in the past.. You should be happy that she did not pick a Kameleon color, that stuff is $32/ounce. The manufacturer of the chosen paint is House of Kolor. The silver is their Shimrin BC-02, the red is UK-11 Kosmic Urethane. The flame colors were Shimrin BC-04 Stratto Blue that I had laying around, the charcoal was something that I custom mixed using the Statto Blue and Meteor Maroon. I won't discuss paint price, let's just say that I almost crapped a Twinkie when I got the price from my jobber. I could not believe the price increase since the last time that I had bought this paint. Here is a pic or the UK-11 Kosmic Kolor can. To me spraying this paint is fun & made me miss doing custom paint jobs on motorcycles. Please note that this paint is not necessarily for a novice painter it takes some practice to get a uniform color from a tinted urethane clear.
