K301 carburetor problem

Recommended Posts

cafoose

I have a 12 hp K301 carburetor with a sloppy throttle shaft. I've read that you must grind off the end of the throttle plate screws before removing them to avoid breaking the screws off. How in the world do you get in there with a grinder? Also, I've read that you should stake the new screws in place to keep them from backing out. How is that accomplished with such little room to work? Also, where would I get bushings and what size? I believe I would also need new screws for the throttle plate. What size and where do I get them?

A dremel with a tiny cutting disc. I would spray them with pb blaster and just go back and forth with a snug screwdriver and work them slowly. most of the time they will come right out. There is a kit you can get with bushing i believe. ill see what i can find. This article may help https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10329

I've done a few of these now. I use a Dremel with a tiny grinding stone or a diamond Stone like you would use for a chainsaw. Works slick to get in there.

Stock size on those bolts is probably something like a number 3 by 48 thread. I don't know the length off the top of my head.

I don't recommend getting an allen head. I would get something that you can bite a little easier like a Philips or even a regular bolt head.

You can stake them by going down through the choke and with a punch but you can also just use the appropriate loctite to hold the bolts in place when you're done.

@JCM or @pfrederi could tell you what size the washers are.

Ace hardware stores have been listed as sources as well.

Ace hardware does have them. I just use a small file. They're brass if original. I re-use them with locktite.

I'll second that.

I have tried.

And failed.

The grinding takes just a little time and saves a ton of @#$_&-+()/   and work.
