Onan 16/18 Plug Brand - Favorite?

Recommended Posts

Tuneup

Hi guys,

Favorite P216/218/220 plug brand and part ID?

The internet isn't much of a help and sometimes asking about favorite plugs is like asking about best oil but I pulled my 516H plugs and they were gapped at .035 and .038. The thing runs well! I was bad after the de-carboning and didn't check them. Gapped to .025. I noticed that they are Delcos. Any preferences from those with experience before I drop $$ for the Onan specials? This machine runs a little on the rich side so they can use a refresh. Thanks!

Mine all have Champion RS14YC 0.025” gap

They all run great.

Ah, thanks, cleat! That might bring up another issue, though. The Champs have no washer but mine do. The head appears to have a seat for one. If washerless is correct, I'd get better reach. This is an 87 engine ending in a B. It's never easy... :)

Well, put on glasses this time and looked more closely and, yes, the seat is beveled. The AC DELCO 41-602 then is bogus.

Onan switched to Champion # RS17YX/909 in the later models used in Wheel Horse, they perform better than the RS14YC and will not foul as easily.

Hi Lynnmor - thanks!

I guess then that the 17 is hotter than a 14? I had a number of choices in terms of what's in stock at the local big box auto store. Settled on NGK TR4. They are noticeably hotter as they should be - the DELCOs weren't burning off the soot. Installed but raining down here all day so a good hard test is forthcoming.

Thanks to all!

I've used Champion spark plugs in my 416-H - I think ?  - been so long since I checked or installed plugs

and I probably will use Champion again ... RS17YX/909 (or whatever)

but having stated that - the NGK plug is probably a better quality plug than a Champion

When the Champion plugs were made here they were good. Then they went to Mexico...and the quality went downhill. Dropped them and now only have the NGK made in Japan plugs. Much better build quality. The TR4/3754 is the correct cross for the RS17YX plugs. Tapered and long reach for the P series, P216, P218 and P220 etc.

I just checked the last pack I bought of Champion plugs not too long ago at Canadian Tire and they are made in USA and look to be good quality.

I will avoid any made in Mexico ones. Thanks for the heads up.

Must be some really old stock! It was many years ago I started to see the made in Mexico plugs. I have a stash from at least 10 years ago that are made in USA. This pic is of one of those and a newer one. For the record, out of thousands of the Mexico plugs, not a single complaint ever received. The NGK plugs have a very good track record and the build quality is better all around so we are sticking with them.
