48" Deck redo

Recommended Posts

Decided to have a go at redoing my belly mower deck for the D-200.  Purchased a complete working deck, but with a not so good shell, in a job lot of tractors and parts, along with a good shell.  The complete deck was bent up a bit and had rusted through.  So I started with redoing the support above the good deck.  Wire brushed it and then sanded it on both sides.  Then I sprayed on one coat of primer.  Somewhere along I noticed that there was 2 of the spot welded nuts missing.  So I go out and took a look at the support on the complete deck.  Yep, it had all the nuts still on, but; the spindles have to be removed along with the idler support bar. No problem except one of the spindles had the nut welded on, and another had a broken housing.  Oh well got out the grinder and cut the nut off.  Ruined the shaft, but the good shell had one spindle still on, with a good shaft.  So round two, redone the wire brushing and sanding then sprayed two coats of primer on it.  Also refinished the idler support bar and the quadrant.  The job lot of parts also came with a good gauge wheel support and the two good carriage draft bars.

Image is what the complete deck looked like when I bought it. I do have the other side belt cover it just wasn't on it.

Finished redoing the pivot brackets and backing plates. Have the good shell out for welding as there was a couple short cracks at the back.

Also pics of the cracks just below the square holes on the bottom.

Front bracket shaft.  Just a bit of advice here: If the front bracket shaft is stuck in one of the mounting brackets, do not put it in your vice and try hammering it out, while the bracket end is right in line with the driver's door of your 2005 Chrysler Crossfire.  Don't ask me how I know.

Picked up a roller stop spring and 4 of the spacers that go between the draft bar and the hitch.  Both are N.O.S. I still need to get 2 more of the roller stop springs as my Wheel Horse dealer only had one left. This is as far as I have done so far, I am supposed to get the welded deck back today, and I hope it's early enough to start refinishing it.

I have the 2 new gauge wheels, 5 new rollers, some idler bar washers and the height adjustment lever spring ordered.

The manual that I have has a misprint on the part numbers for the front and back rollers.and bushings.  5240 and 5241 both have the bushing number included, but the rollers are all the same front and rear.

Gauge wheels came in.  I'll have to do a bit of refinishing to them.

The cracks at the bottom of the lower squares were welded on the top and the underside, then ground down and finally sanded before applying 2 coats of primer and two coats of color.  No filler, not even high build primer, and it turned out almost unnoticeable.
