How much grease into the gear cover?

Recommended Posts

I'm the new owner of an old Wheel Horse model 867.  I know I'm supposed put grease into the gear cover on the mower deck, but I'm not sure how much.  Is the idea to pack as much grease into the space as possible (that is, until it starts to come out of the button hole)?

that space sure is a large large area to fill, but that’s my understanding!

Thanks, pullstart!  I'll make sure I buy grease in bulk.  Haha!

And thanks, too, for the kind welcome.  This community has already been a huge help.  I look forward to learning so I can help others, too!

NO do not fill it.  At the top end of the spindle shaft there should be a zerk fitting.  You put you grease gun in through the hole in the cover and it should be enough inline to snap onto the zerk.  3- pumps is enough.  dot it every 10-15 hours of mowing.

I keep mine greased just enough, I check those decks gears more often now to make sure no debris/grit get stuck.  they don't make new gears anymore.  I keep a good stash of rebuild parts on hand just in case.

Must be the two decks I’ve had in use we’re missing the zerk fitting to start... which is very well a possibility.  When I replaced my belts on one and completely cleaned the boxes out, neither had a fitting so I assumed it needed a big pile!

I appreciate the warnings!  I’ll check for the zerk fitting and grease accordingly.
