ID and repair help

Ha!  I just noticed the model number on the recessed plaque under the ignition.  I’ve never looked at it from that angle.  So, now I just need help with the repair!

I could not read the id tag on the dash but I believe that you have a model 867. 8=horse power, 6=6speed transmission,7=1967.

 

If you are talking about the round cap that I have pointed to. This is a removable plug to access and grease the bevel gears and spindle.

 Thank you, Achto!   The part I am talking about is actually the silver- edged square bit in between the pulley and the red transfer cover (which the grease cap sits in).  The drive rod passes through it and it’s supposed to sit inside that transfer cover.  But it keeps popping out!

Welcome to the forum.

If I remember correctly there should be 2 bolts coming up from the bottom that thread into that bearing block.

Click on the picture. A wild guess on the deck model

Garry is correct. That piece should be held on in place with 2 bolts. There are 2 threaded holes in the bottom of it and the bolt heads would be on the under side of the deck. It's possible they are missing, broken or the area rotted where they pass through.

 

Your neighbor obviously did take care of his horse as that thing looks to be in excellent condition.

The silver thing(bearing carrier) is make out of what we used to call pot metal.  The threads for the two bolts mentioned above are easily stripped out.  The bolts come up through a heavy metal brace that goes across the deck so i doubt anything rusted out.  more likely one or both bolts loosened and fell out  Remove the red cover with the plug in it. (4 small screws).  You should see the two holes the bearing carrier should be bolted to.Work the carries back over the holes and run new bolts in from the bottom.  See if the threads hold.

Well, as these often go, a successful repair was quickly followed by a different failure.  I'm guessing the cross shaft is slightly bent because as soon as I locked in the left side bearing housing and mowed the front yard, the right side bearing housing broke free.  Now I'm taking the deck down and apart so I can assess the cross shaft.  But that's where I could use your advice again.

 

These gears (see pic) are a bear to get loose!  I didn't see any set-screws on the diagram and I've tried WD40 plus a mallet.  Should I get something like a rotor retractor?  Any other tricks?  I sure don't want to damage the gears.

 

If the cross shaft is bent, I don't really know how to straighten it (or if that's even possible).  But a farmer friend of mine knows a good machinist, so I guess I'll get a new one turned.

 

The plus side is I'll be able to give everything a good cleaning before re-assembly!
