Redintheshed 5 #1 Posted April 13, 2020 Ordered a new starter for my 1995 520H from Toro. I pulled the old one to get ready for the install. Any advice to ensure a successful installation would be appreciated.

953 nut 56,016 #3 Posted April 13, 2020 Clean up ate contact points with the block to ensure a good ground and if possible, move your ground wire to a starter bolt.

lynnmor 7,361 #6 Posted April 14, 2020 Did Toro sell you a Mitsubishi starter like the original, or a cheap thing from China?
Redintheshed 5 #9 Posted April 14, 2020 No brand name on the invoice. Product description is "Starter ASM." Assume ASM means "assembled." I'll let you know the brand once it arrives. Thanks to all for the friendly welcome!
Redintheshed 5 #11 Posted April 16, 2020 The new starter arrived. Not a Mitsubishi. The label has a USA mark, but no brand name. It's the new substitute part for the original. Picture below. Installation may not happen until tomorrow. The part is slightly different than the original, but he mounting bracket and location of the solenoid are the same. The starter housing is slightly smaller. Wiring is different, but the contact points are the same layout. Quote 1
Redintheshed 5 #12 Posted April 17, 2020 so far I can't get this starter lined up with the mounting bolts. Anyone know of a starter install video for this?
lynnmor 7,361 #13 Posted April 17, 2020 Is the starter hitting the engine in a way that prevents the holes from lining up? Did you move the engine tin out of the way? Maybe you could stick some long pins in the holes to guide the starter in. Try sticking the old starter in to see if it still goes in easily. I have heard horror stories about these after-market starters. What you have is a $65 starter that Toro sold you with an extreme markup.
Redintheshed 5 #14 Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) Got it in by removing the hood and loosening the front section of the blower cover for better access. Still didn't start. By-passed the seat safety connection and it started. I suspected the seat safety all along, but previous attempt at cleaning the connection didn't resolve the connection problem. And the starter test (jumping with cables connected to the battery) didn't start it. So, now I have a new starter, the original in reserve, and I'm cutting grass again. Ha ha. Thanks for listening.
