How do you paint wheels 2 different colors?

Recommended Posts

Ive always wanted to do a wheel project painting the rim 1 color, and the back mounting plate another color. With it looking good and separated. Any tricks? And how long to wait between colors when taping off?

Thanks

Bo

I've never been that bored, guess that is why I use hub caps.  But, if I wanted to paint two tone rims I would paint the entire rim the color you want for the backing plate.  After a week or more I would mask off the plate area on both sides and paint the rim.

This question really depends on what paint you are using. If you are using an automotive grade base coat / clear coat paint it could be as little as 30min. If you are using Rustoleum It will be more like 7 to 8 days. Carefully read the instructions on the paint that you are using, it should have a recoat time on it.

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure how long to wait to safely mask off fresh paint. I would be using rattle can rustoleum, and more than likely Farm Implement.

Thanks

Ir maybe longer than 7 days, check it before you mask. I have already had to wait a month with Rattle can paint. Leaving the parts out in the Sun can help dry the paint too.

Anyone know what the inside dimension is of the wheel? I would take paper stock and lay it inside. I took the bottom of a bucket and it started to go inside and it was 10 3/16"

That's it Mike. That's what I am thinking about. Not sure which colors for sure but rim one color and mount plate another.

How did you go about it, and how long wait in between colors??

Disclaimer: I have little to no paint skills AND even less patience  .

Here’s the thread on the 1054 rims.
