Does the gear move up/down on the shaft or dow the shaft move.?  IIn either case, shim the shaft with 3/4" ID thin washers until there is no play, but still free to allow shaft to turn.

ps..  I have a NEW replacement shaft with Keyway.

It is hards to tell...top or bottom.  Assuming the blades cut level...at the same height...shim the top in order to maintain parallel cutting with the blades.  You MAY want a shim on BOTH sides of the horizontal driven gear (shown) in order to maintain complete and even mesh with the vertical (drive) gear. This can be precarious and more than one shim may be needed.  This is a really tough call, not having the mower on hand...in my shop to work on.

Here is a pic ...not sure of the length you need.  It is either 3-7/8" or 4" long.

The NEW one I have is 4" long, with woodruff key in this pic.

The TOP one here is NOT for your deck.

Hi all, well got some more done, the spindle shaft, key way sheared, had to use a needle carbide bit, but was able to save it. Put in new thrust bearings and spacers and shaft bearings and seals.       Cross shaft bearing surface was about 20-25 thousands under size, brazed and turned down to 0.750. It'll work. Most of the wait time was getting to use a press, one friend is 45 minutes away to use the press and other guy is never home. So drove 45 minutes the other direction and got this. Still have to adj gaps between bearings and gears. Woke up to snow 2 inches 32 degrees, wind.

I'm rebuilding one of these decks as well (model 5-2362), very similar to yours.

The cylinder that the blade mounts to, can you move that up and down to adjust the play? Or are you supposed to push it all the way up until it bottoms out on the flats?

I replaced the spindle shaft thrust bearing, hardened spacers. Got these from Mc master  carr.  Got a few of both spacers, mix and match till I got about 1/16" free play

Looks good. I got all my bearings from "wheel horse parts and more". He has all the bearings by WH part number, and I grabbed a couple of the 3/4" seals that go in the bottom of the cast iron plate.

That's a nice press.

If you have a good shop air system consider upgrading with this guy:

You have to drill the mounting holes in the base plate, but it makes things go so much faster. Worth it IMO.

  • Thanks 1
