ebinmaine 67,277 #4 Posted April 8, 2020 Beautiful piece. I'll show Trina. She has a uhh... "Thing" for whittling walking sticks. We'll be cutting saplings or limbing a felled tree and she'll purposely snip a portion out. Later I can see a handle and cane appearing...

8ntruck 6,991 #7 Posted April 8, 2020 Making shelves out of those pieces is probably easier than splitting them - at least with hammer and wedges. How did you make the slabs? Chain saw to rough them, then a planner to finish them?

It’s usually spoons but sometimes smaller pieces yield pretty interesting little slabs.

WHX?? 48,783 #10 Posted April 8, 2020 Nice Cas .. a few of the things I made out of "trash" wood. We got the cabin thing going on here so I gravitate to slab or any kind of knotty pine or boards with bark edges. No where's near the sliver wizard you are and usually limit myself to bird houses. 2

formariz 11,987 #12 Posted April 9, 2020 I always felt that wood with so called defects and not so high grades had the most beautiful grain and figure in it.If it was only up to me I would have my entire house done like yours, but I have to compromise with the other half although sometimes she acts more like two thirds. Trina and I call that Character. We purposely buy the wood that others won't because we love the look of it. We now have doorways floors and shelves made of character.
WHX?? 48,783 #15 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) High grades are out the window here. Absolutely everything that gets made here comes off the property. .. no exceptions. Luckily tho I have a guy close who's got a woodmiser to saw lumber and all I have is a table top Dewalt 12" planer. Did I mention I am a birch fan?? Use some creatively and birch poles can add some wow. Edited April 9, 2020 by WHX24

D_Mac 8,593 #17 Posted April 9, 2020 I picked this carving up at an auction a couple of years ago. Once I got it home I found out it was to tall to go out on my front porch. Was almost 10 ft tall. Since I didnt want to leave it out doors year round I sold it. Some people see some interesting things in a piece of wood.
