Bselectro12 0 #1 Posted April 4, 2020 (edited) I can’t seem to find out any information on how to replace this needle bearing. I’m pretty sure it’s the 1518 5/8 input shaft bearing. Any Info would be a huge help. Edited April 4, 2020 by Bselectro12
953 nut 55,773 #2 Posted April 5, 2020 That bearing looks great, why do you want to replace it? It isn't subjected to any heavy loads and should last another half century,
Bselectro12 0 #3 Posted April 5, 2020 Cool thanks for the reply. Yes the bearing is in great shape just wondering how I would replace it if I had to.
953 nut 55,773 #4 Posted April 5, 2020 IF it need to be replaced you would drive an awl in between the bearing and the shaft, pull the awl and use a small punch to collapse it a bit more then it will come out. 1

The Tuul Crib 7,337 #6 Posted April 5, 2020 (edited) TO @stevasaurus would be the one to answer this one. Edited April 5, 2020 by The Tool Crib
oliver2-44 9,861 #8 Posted April 5, 2020 I have a slide hammer bearing puller set from harbor Freight. It has some ends that expand and grab the insid eof the bearing, then you use the slide hammer to pull it out. We'd love to see a picture of the complete tractor. 2
stevasaurus 22,865 #10 Posted April 5, 2020 Both methods above work...the bearing puller, if you have one, would be the tool to use. Like Richard, that bearing looks great...keep it. They come out a lot easier if they are bad.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #11 Posted April 6, 2020 A half round cold chisel works well for collapsing needle bearings. The rounded side goes against the cast iron and little chance of causing damage. The one I have is about 3/16" wide. Also works well for removing an inner exhaust pipe from the outer if you are trying to save the outer. Cut the inner off and use the chisel between the two to collapse the inner. For blind ball bearings use a piece of hardwood dowel that just slips inside the bearing. Fill the cavity with grease, start the dowel in the hole and drive it with a hammer. It exerts tremendous hydraulic pressure behind the bearing forcing it out. It may not go all the way but enough you can slip an appropriate puller on the inside to pull it the rest of the way. WHX?? 49,162 #12 Posted April 6, 2020 (edited) Man I love you guys ... you got nothing on @wallfish when it comes to back yard getting hammered! Little story here...I remember when I first joined and I watched The Dino's video on getting bearings out of a 3 piece. Grind down a carriage bolt and hook it out. I promptly marched right down to the shop to a lady in waiting and comenced to grinding one. Holy crap he ain't as dumb as he looks I thought. FF to today and we talk almost weekly. THANK YOU @stevasaurus ! Since then I have graduated to a blind hole bearing puller set as Ollie mentioned. Thank you Steve for getting me started down the right path. This is how we learn from our elders! @Bselectro12 Edited April 7, 2020 by WHX24 1

Pullstart 63,096 #16 Posted April 7, 2020 My favorite cocktail just goes pppfffsssjhhttt! When you open it. Easy peasey pre-school squeezey! We have long practiced NOT asking the younguns to get us a beer... but once in a while it’s just convenient when they’re in the fridge..
Pullstart 63,096 #17 Posted April 7, 2020 Oh! I had some actual input for the question at hand too! on an automotive engine if you need to replace a pilot bearing in a crank, you can pack the hole full of grease and find an appropriate sized pin or dowel to drive into the grease. The hydraulic action will push the bearing / bushing out of the hole.
