JCM 9,392 #1 Posted April 4, 2020 The 310-8 showed up at my shop this past Winter that was used at a Private School . The Transmission has a crack above the Hitch and resembles what looks like to me possibly water entered the trans and froze but I could be wrong. I have seen Cast Iron Baseboard heat freeze and the front expanded and looked similar. I pulled the dipstick and the end of it looked like someone put it on a bench grinder ? There is gear oil everywhere on the rear end and leaked bad taking it off the back of the truck at delivery. The hitch looks like it may have been used to pull something quite heavy, maybe the culprit for the crack. I have not had time to even start it but I am told it runs. Next question , I have a parts tractor that is a Model 01-08K802-18067 0162 and comes up as a 1981 C-81 but has C-85 hood on it , possibly a hood change ? Is this 1981 the correct year and would this trans be a candidate for the 310-8. The 310-8 is a Model 21-10K806 - 37632. Thank you for any help. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
ebinmaine 68,347 #2 Posted April 4, 2020 8 speed to 8 speed... that should be a direct swap. Size of the axles might be different but that won't interfere with anything you're doing. Others may have different information. The only thing I can think of would be the inlet for the dipstick being different from one to the other but they should be able to be swapped. If you have any desire to just get a transmission instead of removing it from the C81 I have at least one spare, maybe two. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
stevasaurus 22,863 #3 Posted April 4, 2020 All that Eric said is correct. I'll just add that the C-81 shows having the WH #103916 transmission. This transmission uses the #111199 needle bearing to cradle the differential carriage...this is from when they ran out of the infamous #1533 ball bearing. This should also not hamper the trans swap, just some information you should know. Another option is to see if the other transmission case is weldable. Some pictures of the crack would be nice to see. It may also be possible to replace the case or case half from a vendor like A-Z Tractors. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #4 Posted April 4, 2020 Model 01-08K802 is a 1980 C-85. Toro incorrectly named this model in their info. The C-x1 models were only produced in 1978 and 1979. The C-x5 models were produced 1980 to 1984. Click on the picture for more info Wiring and ignition system is the biggest difference in the two models you have. JCM 9,392 #6 Posted April 4, 2020 Thank you @stevasaurus @gwest_ca and @ebinmaine Steve, the PO apparently may have forgot that a nice Kohler 8 HP needs motor oil to function properly and the engine is in a Rubbermaid Tote for now. I am in Maine and the tractor is in Mass, next time I am down there I will try to get pics, I was a little concerned about the end of the dipstick and how that got scored like someone or something ground it down a little, I will get a pic of that too. Garry, I always thought it was the original hood and could not understand why the model # did not match up, then I was thinking could the hoodstand have been swapped out. stevasaurus 22,863 #7 Posted April 5, 2020 If Eric has a case half that gets rid of the crack, I think the one he has should bolt together with your other half. You would have one side with the #1533 ball bearing and the other side with the #111199 needle bearing. Both of those transmissions use the same #3912 gasket. the inside diameter of the #1533 is 1 1/2" the inside diameter of the #111199 is 40 mm 1.500" = 38.1 mm or 1.5748" = 40 mm Being a rough carpenter, I'm thinking it will work...a machinist I am not. 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
