Broken equipment

Just have to rant for a bit.

How hard is just fixing a problem? I'll give some examples of my pap literally just straight up ignoring advice and then getting angry about it, because apparently fixing the problem is harder then just wasting gallons upon gallons of oil, hydraulic fluid, etc, etc. We seem to be stuck in a cycle of not doing maintenance on equipment, then getting annoyed when it breaks and buying another piece of equipment.

 

   Our 2955 has been through 3 hydraulic pumps because the transmission has no fluid all the time. Why? Because every seal is leaking, not only on the transmission, but on the front axle, too.

   Our John deere backhoe has a leaking lift cylinder for the boom, now it can't dig for crap. My pap keeps saying we have to fix it but it just sits. He runs it a lot with absolutely 0 fluid in it.

   Our 2950 needed a clutch, we took it in and they were saying that we had to replace all the gears because someone ran it with the clutch out of adjustment and just slammed it in gear. Now it won't go into 1st without slamming it in because guess what? My pap never got the gears replaced, like we were told to do.

   We have 2 square balers now, both of which are broke. One got loaned to my pap's buddy, literally had it 2 hours and swallowed a rock with the baler, ruined the knotters so it can't tie the bales, we just bought another baler which has a problem with it getting clogged because someone didn't look over the baler before paying 2500$ and didn't notice that the inside is smashed half closed, so the bales back up bad. Never made a single bale and it's been sitting for 3 years now.

   Our round baler has had a bearing out since we bought it 7.5 years ago, did we ever fix the bearing? No! Did we ever clean the baler? No! Me and my brother cleaned the baler out before we stored it, and oh my god, the amount of CRAP that came out, there was a pile of oily hay and dirt probably 10 ft by 10 ft and about 3 feet high.

   Our skidloader has been ran multiple times with low oil (low enough to fill, not low enough to do damage), because my pap never checks the oil in anything before running it, and the rear seal leaks like a sieve. It's needed an alternator for over 15 years, the dude we got it off of bought a new alternator in 2005. We did have the alternator, but sat in the back of our truck for 5 months and got stolen at a farmer's market. We still haven't replaced it, and now it doesn't charge at all, and the whole time you run it it's beeping at you because the alternator light's on.

   Our 455 needs a steering cylinder because the pressure seal came out the end of the cylinder. Is he going to run it that way? You bet! His reasoning is that "it was only leaking a little bit."

   Our X485 needs the water pump resealed. Have we resealed it? Nope! Has pap ran it multiple times with 0 coolant in it? Yep! I'll leave it up to him to get angry when it eventually locks up.

 

I mean, why do preventative maintenance when you can just ignore the problem, let the machine break, and then buy a new problem filled machine to replace it?

Reactive maintenance will always cost more the preventative maintenance. I have family members that have the same issue, they would rather run some thing into the ground and then buy another POS to replace it instead of fixing what they have. :confusion-shrug:Don't understand it, can't explain it.  Sorry.

WE feel your pain.

 

Many a round baler has caught fire over a worn out bearing spitting out sparks onto the dry hay or straw being baled.

 

I'm puzzled over your statement neighbor borrows square baler and picks up a rock large enough the destroy the knotter, first the hay had to be cut then wind-rowed once or twice.

 

You should have had  the large rock tested to see if it was a meteorite, one that size would net you a small fortune. Enough to replace both broken down balers with $$$ to spare.

 
Meteorites are quite valuable, worth as much as $1,000 per gram, according to the LiveScience website. Kellyco Metal Detectors posted on eBay that it can sell for $300 per gram or more — meaning 1 pound could be worth $1 million. "Meteorites are rarer than gold, platinum, diamonds or emeralds.
