Eric,

   I hate to admit my age but I remember using the metal oil can spout.Many an oil change and top off with one.Of course the PB Blaster and anything with synthetic on it is fairly new.

Those were on the way of the dodo bird when I got into cars but I definitely did use some....

If I remember correctly the oil didn't always come out of the metal spout but on top of the can if not inserted all the way.  ?

Yup.   You're right.  I had forgotten that little gem.

My fav was the card board containers with the metal top & bottom. Try to puncture the can with the spout and end up having the card board can crush or buckle on you. Course I was pretty young when these were in use so maybe I was doing it wrong.

Absolutely...I remember my 93 year old dad showing us how you punched it through the can and then shimmied it side to side to curl the can top down until the spout hit the rim just right... and it still leaked!!! 

 

As dad always told us five kids: “I taught you everything I know, and you still don’t know anything...!” - come to think of it he still says that...!

Anybody remember the Monkey Grip Hot Patches and spider looking clamp mounted on the garage wall. Filed the tube around the hole clamped the patch down and set it on fire.

The one we had was portable, hot patch vulcanizing, they gave off a lot of smoke once the fuel was lit.

Looks to be Tungar bulb rectified battery charger, eerie glow in the dark light. i believe the Tungar bulb came before the selenium rectifier was invented.

I hate to admit my age but can remember when my car used a 6 volt battery., a generator, vacuum wipers and  the whole car was made from metal..

 

Had 6.50 x 15 biased tires, when radials came out you thought you died and went to heaven they rode so smooth and gripped the highway like a tigers paw..

Yup, the things I don't miss - my 1st car had 4 wheel drum brakes with no self adjuster mechanism, ignition points, carburetor with a finicky choke, vacuum wipers, no backup lights, and a 12 volt generator. Every 5 thousand miles or so, you had to adjust the brakes and the points. As for the vacuum wipers, as they say, they suck. The real annoying item was the pair of nylon cord snow tires the previous owner threw in when I bought it - they would get pretty large flat spots on the tread from sitting overnight - they rode like Flintstone tires for about 5 miles until they heated up.

Vacuum wipers, what a hoot they were not enough power to remove slushy snow or rain in a heavy down pour and would stop working when the vehicle was going up a grade.

 

You could add a canister to the system that would store extra vacuum for such occasions.

 

If Chris's 30 DeSoto does not already have a vacuum reservoir he might consider adding one. Is just a can with a one way check valve installed in the vacuum line coming off the intake manifold.

 

Could use a check valve from a power brake booster with the grommet set directly into the canister.

The bear contains Rose Wine.

The blue handle item is a battery cell tester.

Here's the battery that sits beside the charger.

It has a broken corner from being dropped.

It was sitting on the shelf (broken mind you. Not sellable)   of a local Chevrolet dealer for several decades because the owner wouldn't allow anything to be tossed.

great to see the old Esso stuff 

 

brings back memories - almost brings a tear to my eyes lol

 

a neighbor owned a local Exxon service station - I worked there for years when I was a kid 

still recall when they made the changeover from Esso to Exxon 

across the intersection was a small Gulf station with a penny candy store inside ... spent a lot of time there also  ... could fill a small paper bag with candy for a quarter 

 

good candy - but avoid the Gulf gas - only gas our little two stroke bikes objected to ... ran hot and detonated ... ironically Gulf 'No Knocks' was the worst in this category 

 

back in the day the Amoco premium was the stuff we often  looked for ... Amoco 'white gas' ... even more than Sunoco 260 ...
