Sailman 1,291 #1 Posted March 22, 2020 Just became owner of a 1971 GT 14. I grew up on a farm in Iowa with lots of tractor experience. Now a sailing captain with some experience on diesel engines. Love the old wheel horses and ran across this GT 14. Tractor appears to be original but has some issue. Posting the picture....sure it will get some chuckles...or groans....previous OP must have been a Dukes of Hazzard fan! Sailman 1,291 #8 Posted March 22, 2020 Dont think I will be jumping over anything for a while...:( Having an issue with the Transmission Ed. asking for advice over on the transmissions forum and the prognosis is not good. Tractorhead 9,064 #9 Posted March 22, 2020 (edited) to oh, i thaught you’re maybe a Duke brother.. 😎 don‘t try too much on one step, the General Lee design has a big advance, it is not green so deal with it, until your trannytroubles are fixed. btw, a Wheel Horse mostly ain‘t stay‘s allone, they tend to become a Herd. Here are a lot of fantastic knowledged surrounding in this Forum, so why you hesitate? Because of cost or because of doing ? if you be able to fix and diesel engine, you be able to fix your tranny. Tractorhead 9,064 #11 Posted March 23, 2020 You be here on the best Wheel Horse Knowledgebase on the Planet, I see in your „General Lee“ a good base to start, and it seems as i thaught, you keep engines running by changing or reworking parts, so in princip that is not much difference except the advance, you can do the most work in a warm basement. Your Horse deserved it to be reworked, I’m sure you did it yourself. If you ain‘t able, you get here support in each Way. Here are some well experienced Fellas, you can ask for how to, the rest i see as a simply „just doing it“ so don‘t hesitate. If parts are really required, you find here spare. Rob R 966 #16 Posted March 25, 2020 I owned a lot of Tractors in my 73 yrs ….. there just isn't any Tractor quite like it Wheel Horse or other brand. Many of the features on this 50yr old machine are still admired today. Put a new tire on and see what I got to work with. Amazing the seat is in great shape. Just pulled it off the pan and the plastic was still under it.... Looking forward to the test drive soon. Sailman 1,291 #20 Posted March 28, 2020 Thank you folks for the welcome! Should have the wheel fixed, new tire mounted and give her a good test drive this week. Keeping my fingers crossed that all will be working. The forward most head bolt was missing so cleaned the threads with a tap today and fitted a new 3/8 bolt. Engine ran fine without the bolt....I have updates over on the transmission forum for the transmission leak / repair. Will be asking a few questions here I am sure!! Sailman 1,291 #21 Posted April 3, 2020 Whoo Hoo the GT 14 runs great! Plenty of pull and smooth operating transmission. Brings back old memories.... Only issue is idler pulley on main belt seems to be hitting on the rear fender. Makes a racket with belt guard on. I measured the spool and it is 1 inch from rim to rim. Seems too big. Belt is 5/8 and does not look like pulley can be moved any closer. Is this the wrong size pulley? Any ideas? Thanks! Sailman 1,291 #25 Posted April 3, 2020 Is the 1 inch idler pulley correct? Its actually hitting on the fender. Have pulled fender out as far as possible and the idler pulley arm is in as tight to the tractor as it can be. Looks like the pulley is too wide. What is the width on other GT 14 idler pully? GT 14 owners? I do want to replace the spring to put better tension on the pulley. Any suggestion where to purchase the spring? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
