McGrew 460 #1 Posted March 22, 2020 Folks, I have a problem, and don’t know where to start. Looking for advice! I put down Winter (annual) rye grass several months ago. The grass in my yard three seasons of the year is primarily Bermuda. BTW, I HATE that stuff. But that is another story. The Bermuda goes dormant during the colder months, and my dogs (Rottweilers) tear up the yard when playing, That, and the fact that it just looks good are the reasons for the Winter rye. And the dogs feet stay cleaner. They live in the house with us. I need to mention we have had the wettest 3 months in history here in SC. The grass needs to be cut every 3 days... My wife does all the riding and I do the trimming. Now the problem: This grass is accumulating under the decks of both the tractor (not a WH), and my push mower. I took the deck off and scraped about 20 lbs of clippings from the tractor yesterday before cutting, and sharpened the blades. When the grass was cut, I washed the bottom of the deck, and got another large trimmings off, The grass was around 6” tall, and it was cut first at 5”, and then again at 4”. My wife does not cut when the grass is wet, but I’m guessing that Winter rye holds a lot of moisture? How can I prevent this? Is there a non-stick coating that will help? Pam cooking spray? peter lena 8,583 #2 Posted March 22, 2020 mcgrew, looking over whats available for your issue , HI LIFT BLADES , would enhance lift and side discharge , found some here , https://powerlawntools.com/major-types-of-lawn-mower-blades/, in addition to your blades , i would get after the belt drive set up, could be , bad drive belt, bearing failure at drive pulleys , ( slowing down blade speed and discharge ) . the fact that you cleaned out so much built up grass , tells me you do not have cutting or discharge speed. don,t know what brand of tractor you have , but you should be able to look up cutting issues on it . no stick spray would help if you are discharging regularly , obviously ,you are not . hope you find your answer , pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
lynnmor 7,302 #3 Posted March 22, 2020 No stick sprays will only be a little help. Be sure that you are running at maximum RPM. I run up on a ramp and flush the underside with a garden hose immediately after EVERY mowing. If I wait or do it after several mowings, it will never come clean. skrusins 128 #4 Posted March 22, 2020 I have a 42RD and a 48SD both I was able to but 6 blades under each deck 3 of them are gator blades.I don't know about wet rye, but it sure makes the grass really fine. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
McGrew 460 #5 Posted March 22, 2020 Guys, Thanks for the ideas! Peter, when I had the deck off, I checked the bearings and belt, All good. I will definitely look into the high lift blades, as the ones on the deck are getting close to replacement time. The mower is a newer Cub Cadet. Since my wife does all the riding, I try to indulge her wishes when it comes to mowers... The pushmower that plugs up just as badly is new, and the blade is perfect. But, it is set up for mulching and has no discharge chute. Since the only place for the clippings to go is down, I may just have to live with the problem until the Winter rye dies out. The good news is that mower is easily flipped on its side for cleaning. Lynnmor, the suggestion on keeping the rpm up is not something I thought of. Good idea, and a easy fix! WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #6 Posted March 22, 2020 As far a mowing is concerned Wide Open Throttle is the ONLY way to mow period it is how the decks were designed to do there jobs... If ground speed is of a concern instead of lower throttle positions try a lower gear range or less motion control input but always WOT while using PTO driven implements. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
oilwell1415 563 #7 Posted March 22, 2020 I have to clean out the deck on our mower a few times per season. It’s a Husky push mower. My mom uses a Snapper 50” on her yard and I usually do it a few times as well. Doesn’t seem abnormal to me, especially as wet as it’s been. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
