Internet searching

Just posted a comment about putting quotes on a CL search (ex: "wheel horse").  This made me ponder what we all know about searching the Internet.  So I will toss out a couple things I know and hopefully others can add to the list.

First - For general searching I do not use Google.  They collect way too much information.  Instead I use https://www.startpage.com/ .  It acts as a go between for Google.  Claims to be the most private search engine on the net.

Second - you can type in a question.  No punctuation needed.  ex: How do I remove a tire from a rim

Third - you can search a site.  Here you have to use a primary search engine.  (Google, Bing etc).  At google.com type in "clutch site:wheelhorseforum.com".  No quotes needed.  Replace clutch with your search term.

Fourth - you can use wildcard characters to search.  ex: *.pdf site:wheelhorseforum.com will bring up all the pdf files on the site.  I have used this to find documents that were not meant to be publicly available (a contract).

When searching a site do not put www. at the start of the site name and do not put a "/" at the end.

Hope these hints help you with your future searches.

Thanks a lot for the quotations.  Now I found a cool B-60!

Question: What’s better than a Pull Start tractor with an 8 speed?

Answer: Two of them!

I always search Craigslist with the following: "wheel horse" | wheelhorse

That will search for both spellings at the same time.

The bar separating the two is this symbol

Search engines have incredible power.  Google is used by cyber forensic engineers to do amazing deep dive searches.  I have only nicked the surface of its capability and am under no illusion as to my ability to what they do.

Try duckduckgo.com as a search engine.

No tracking, no ads that all of a sudden pop up based on your recent searches etc.

Excellent and I am guessing there are others as well.

Anybody reviewing my searches would die of boredom!     :text-lol:                 :confusion-confused:     Guess it could be used as a cure for insomnia though.     :ychain:

@bcgold I forgot about mentioning  the use of + and - signs.

To expand on this the + and - sign allow you limit and control your searching.  Putting a -trailer on a search should eliminate hits that include the word trailer.

Very interesting information! I also use an extension called ScriptSafe. You will be surprised to see who all wants to know what you are searching. I also keep up with Krebs on Security by nature of my old job. It's not the most exciting reading, but the site is searchable and address many topics that pertain to anyone using the internet.
