Mudrig150 298 #1 Posted March 13, 2020 Ah, telemarketers... I'm 16, been getting these voicemails non stop for the last couple months. Every month the time between calls gets shorter. It's something about "Here at Joice insurance, you may be entitled to a NEW, more affordable insurance plan, rated 10 stars, and better then any other brand with the highest customer satisfaction rate! That name is Joice, J, O, I, C, E. Please call this number to discuss your new insurance plan." First month it was 7 days between voicemails. Second month, 6. Third month, 5, and so on. They leave a message under a different number every time, including dummy numbers that make it seem like family members are calling, marked as urgent, and then I answer to "Here at Joice insurance, you could be entitled to..." I just got a notification that my voicemail storage was full, I checked my voicemail and I had 500 unread voicemails just from this company, one every 20 MINUTES. I turned off my voicemail notifications except for urgent calls but they marked their calls as urgent so they push the notifications anyway. My 13 year old sister just checked her voicemail and they've just started filling her voicemail, 115 unread voicemails for this fake "Joice insurance." The kicker is that it's not even a real company. It's a fake insurance company, I guess trying to steal money. For now, I've just muted my phone pretty much permanently because I'm tired of getting notifications every 20 minutes, and eventually it'll probably get worse. Sigh. Pullstart 62,796 #2 Posted March 13, 2020 Time to control how and where people find your phone number... and start blocking even though they change their numbers... I find that each time I list my number on a CL ad, junk calls ramp up. Fortunately it’s fairly easy to answer and give them a run for the bank with my flip phone then get the satisfaction of a good solid flop shut hangup. Now I require any buyer to email me with their phone number and I’ll call them.
Mudrig150 298 #3 Posted March 13, 2020 I pretty much never give out my phone number, I was trying to sign up for a site, they randomly had an optional- but marked as required, option to automatically send phone number. I never signed up but I got an email stating that entering my email address into the site meant I already agreed to the terms of service (and to giving out my phone number), without signing up. Only place I can think they got my phone number.
Tractorhead 9,064 #4 Posted March 13, 2020 I never give my phone number to any Website, even if they told me „it‘s required“. if really required to get access to a Site, i typing a fake number of my Provider, to verify my phone connectivity, if i don‘t get any access because of the fake number, i ignore this site - that easy. There are a lot of phishing sites in the Web, and also commercial Websites, they sometimes sell your Data to other Companies like insurance or Selling Companies. On Email, you be able to blacklist their Server or put them into spam Folder. But on Phone abuse, you just can block that number via your Provider. There was in the past another trick how the get your best - your Money, they called you by just 1x ring and hangup. So you see a number that looks a local one and you try to re call, because it looks to a possible known number. First a closer view told you, this number was from outside your County, and a callback cost you here 23$/sec. If you call back this number, you be in a line with music that never stops. With that scenario they „ robbed“ you via your Phone contract, and there was no possibility to get the money back. So be carefully by recall any number you don‘t know. Allway‘s have a closer look to the complete number including the pre dial. Here now it‘s no more allowed to do Cold calls to any person by law. did you don‘t have same

They do it all the time with disposable phones, you get a fake number, contact someone, they try to conenct anyone to the number, nothing. I've tried (on another dummy phone, it's old and doesn't work for anything except calls) to call the numbers they provide but they usually end up in a "we are sorry, this line is currently unavailable. Please leave your message for the recipient" message that is clearly just an answering machine, I guess verifying you as a real human, so they can try to sell you stuff, or asking for money or something. All I know is, it's very, very, ANNOYING! All I did was enter my email and the second I pressed Tab on the site to enter a sign in password, they had me. Now I get constant emails and calls from random companies trying to sell me stuff, and some people trying to say they've stolen my passwords.
Tractorhead 9,064 #6 Posted March 13, 2020 If you’re clever enough to use different passwords, you’re just fine. 😂 i bet you are. on the other side, i had in last time before that law grips also few „ contacts“ and told them allway‘s hey, can you call me later not a good time now. then i shutdown the phone and let the answering machine do the rest of the joke. That depends 2 -3 weeks and your phone wan‘t ringing that much. I don‘t know much about US phone companies and contracts, because i had in my last USA trip a prepaid one, but for a short timeline this can be also a possibillity to relaxing that situation. after emptied the card you have a „phone number“, you can give them to feed the trolls. 😎 The harder Way is to change the phone number and use your old number for that purposes. Honestly, I use 1 password with slight differences. So far, I've never had many issues. The people who say they've stolen my passwords are usually just trolls. I ask them if they can tell it to me and they usually say they can't remember.
rmaynard 15,428 #8 Posted March 13, 2020 I assume this is a cell phone you are having the issue with. Contact your provider and ask them to help. Here is something I pulled from a USA Today article from last year. "In June, the FCC mandated service providers use caller verification at the network level to verify the legitimacy of a call — known as the SHAKEN/STIR, or Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs and the Secure Telephone Identity Revisited standard. This would give providers the option to stop a call before it reaches a customer, or label the call either as a verified, good caller, or warn the customer the call might be spam." T-Mobile does a good jb of this. They also put a new option on my phone of verifying the call. They can blab away and i get a text of what they say. Life is so much better with t-Mobile for me, anyway] We have unlimited everything for forty bucks a line. I like guys like Dan bongino and just fire up the old u-tube and listen to him on a Bluetooth device. My car and shop radio both have bluetooth. I also listen to Pandora music for free. A few short commercials is no big deal. I detest smart phones for the internet, but mie makes a great hot spot to power this ten year old laptop that i just named Lazarus. He was rescued from being a complete brick for 12 dollars.
The Tuul Crib 7,336 #10 Posted March 19, 2020 This brings to mind of another issue maybe totally unrelated. When you go to the doctors office they ask you when you fill out paperwork for your Social Security number. I will never pass that out anywhere and especially the doctors office. It's not needed for a visit
Mudrig150 298 #11 Posted March 22, 2020 I reported the number three days ago. Just woke up to an empty voicemail and a text saying they're investigating the number. Hopefully somebody got in trouble. Thank god they stopped, I was getting tired of deleting 500 voicemails every day.
