Stepney 2,325 #4 Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) Its an old Alligator wrench, the teeth have worn or corroded away. Pipefitter tool for twisting rounded stock, pipes, etc. Works somewhat on square heads too. Edited March 12, 2020 by Stepney

My Allis Chalmers loving uncle said the same thing to me lol I am going to hang it up in the garage, just wish the name of it hadn't corroded off, but what do you expect seeing as though its probably been buried to 50 years.

Jennifer 1,877 #11 Posted March 13, 2020 (edited) DESCRIPTION This "alligator" wrench (so-called because of its shape, like an "alligator's mouth") was used to turn iron and steel pipes and rods which could not be turned with a regular wrench. A pipefitter often used such a tool in fitting or removing air- and water-piping from a locomotive. This tool is part of a collection of hand tools used in the inspection and repair of steam locomotives in Salisbury, North Carolina from the early- to the mid-20th century, roughly 1900-1955. Light repairs on steam locomotives were usually done in roundhouses at the many small locomotive terminals-throughout a railroad’s system; heavy repairs were done in large, centralized repair shop serving the whole system (often referring to as the “Back Shop”). There was no recycling in the day so most farmers threw their worn out stuff and garbage in the back of the barn to rust away. Going through them one can find all kinds of interesting things. I came upon a old IH combine that was made mostly of two inch angle that was still usable for hundreds of horse projects. They charge good money for a length of angle iron these days! 15 hours ago, jabelman said: post some bottle pics, we used to dig alot for them Yup that being another one of them... American nose pickers show got nothing on us! Kids we used to dig old bottles up to break with our Daisy's. Wonder how many we broke with a BB that were collectors! 1
