Spark plug appears to be installed and the pepper pot muffler looks to be in decent condition.

?

What you call the 'pepper pot' muffler...

Are those more valuable, or desireable, for some reason?

Asking cuz i see lots of discussion on mufflers, and many seem to get excited over this type, and i always wondered why?

I always figured the newer type, tube style, mufflers to be the better design, if for no other reason than reduced noise...

I think your thinking of the shower head muffler.
Pepper Pot's are still available new and do nothing for sound.. though are authentic to certain models.

The original muffler to those 19/23 type B&S engines are of a different shape, that one likely was just a refit.

Very desirable & valuable amongst collectors. Mostly used on small bore motors.

If it turns over buy it, it will run. If it don't turn over then you're taking a chance.

If it does turn over the first thing that I would do (after changing the oil) is cut the points wire off and replace the original coil with an solid state coil, part #398811 or after market equivalent. This coil will have to be installed opposite of the directions on the coil, or put it on backwards. Then rebuild or replace the carb. Those cast iron Briggs are tough engines. Hopefully it will work out for you.

The 8 hp Briggs that came on my David Bradley has a SSI coil off of a 5hp briggs on it. Obviously doesn't match up well with the flywheel since it's larger diameter, but it runs!
