Spindle V-belt # for 48 in. deck same as for 42 in.?

Recommended Posts

VenetianWheelHorse

Recently purchased a C-125 with a 48 in. deck. Went onto the Toro website to get the part number for the spindle belt and the drive belt. It appears that Toro gives exactly the same numbers for both the 42 in. AND the 48 in. decks, i.e. # 6738 for the spindle belt, and # 102742 for the drive belt, for both decks.

I can, perhaps, understand that the drive belt might be the same for both decks. But the spindle belt?
The width of cut is wider in the 48 in. and such increase in width is not due entirely to longer blades (16 in. vs 14 in.) but also, I assume, to the two side spindles being located further apart in the 48 in deck than in the 42 in one. Hence why the same belt?

Can anybody who has the 48 in. deck (05-48MS02 or anything similar) confirm whether they are using the 6738 as the spindle belt?

Thanks!

If you look farther down that list you should see the same illustration item number with a different part number. Problem is the parts lists are shared  with another deck model but they do not identify what fits what.

Drive belt 102742 replaced by 94-2501 (1/2" x 103")
Spindle belt 1594 (1/2" x 107.21")

Have added the belts to the information page for the files. Saves having to download a file to get the info. Click on the picture to see them.

Thanks Garry. That was fast!

And you are right, I missed the fact that further down the page they also give 1594 as belt number for the spindle belt.

But it is not clear yet which belt fits which desk.

I am hoping that someone who is running a 48 in. side discharge deck can actually confirm which belts they are using.

@ gwest_ca-(File Mod)

@ pfrederi

Thank you both for your reply, but now scratching my head furiously!

The original belt, as given by Toro's, i.e. # 6738, appears to have a length of 86 and 1/8 inches, while the one replacing it, i.e. # 1594, appears to have a length of 107 and 1/4 inches. That's quite a big difference in length. What's going on?

6738 is the spindle belt for the 42" deck

Your deck in the original post looks like a 48" because the cut height adjuster is on the left side.

The height adjuster is on the right side of the 42" decks.

Decks are sized by their width of cut - not the width of the deck.

The belts we use for most applications are sized like fractional horse power belts for small electric motors. 1/4hp to 3/4hp - why they are call fractional hp belts.

The belts we need are designed for higher hp and if the belt runs over a flat idler it must be designed to withstand that reverse bend for a reasonable lifespan.

Gates is a national make here and have a green covered belt that meets this requirement.

Here is an original manual for the 48" deck which may be different than your model but the belts will be the same. What uses what is clearly shown unlike the online parts lists.

Click on the piture.

Same manual number as the 42" above but I may have just posted the appropriate pages for each size of deck to reduce file size.

Garry, thanks for the fast and very detailed, as usual, answer. Quick additional question.

Very difficult to get Gates over here in Europe. Easier to get Stens (though I can only get it shipped to the UK and then have to take it to Italy in the suitcase).

1) Is a Stens belt suitable for withstanding that reverse bend action you mention?

2) If Stens is acceptable, should I go for a Stens with kevlar and cloth surface covering (i.e. Stens True Blue), or should I go for a plain (old fashion) black Stens OEM Replacement belt?

@ Garry, thanks for the file you uploaded as it shows how to attach the deck to the tractor. Another riddle solved!

This Toro dealer also carries Stens parts.

If it were me I would go Toro 1st if you have a dealer

True-Blue 2nd

Standard Stens belt 3rd.

Thanks for the link Garry as it will allow me to find the Stens equivalent for the Toro ones..

I see that in the US a Toro belt is only 20% more expensive than a good after market one such as Stens (34.12$ vs 28.69$). Not so in Italy unfortunately.

Here a Toro OEM is at least twice as expensive as an aftermarket one. The 1594 is currently (10 March 2020) priced by Toro Italy at 41.031€ + 22% VAT = 50.06€ equivalent to 56.59$. The local dealer might then add his mark up. Is it worth it buying a Toro one? Over here, not really.
