1973Auto 80 #1 Posted March 2, 2020 Hello All. I have an annoying problem. The Index Pin that engages with the C-Channel won’t stay locked in the hole. I took this apart and twisted the pin around the spring which made it engage the hole and stay locked, but this was short lived. I believe the Cotter pin holding the spring and pin in place is worn enough to not hold the pin in the correct position but not worn enough for the pin to fall off. Is there a trick to get a new cotter pin in place and hold the pin/spring in position before I take an Angle grinder and cut off the top of the frame that covers the C-Channel? Currently I have the blade chained in one direction and then chin in the other direction when needed. Thanks All.!! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Darb1964 1,042 #2 Posted March 2, 2020 I think the spring is weak or the handle and pivot lever may need adjusting. I had the same problem, when I adjusted every thing so the pin went in far enough and did not pull out to far when pulled back to change your angle it solved the problem. Took a a few tyres. My spring is a little week and I need to work the lever back in forth to get the pin to engage. When things get worn it needs to be adjusted to keep it working. I put small amount of oil on everything,but not to much, sand and grit magnet. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
1973Auto 80 #3 Posted March 2, 2020 thanks Darb i believe the spring is weak, trued everything you mentioned, but how do i get in there to replace the spring. peter lena 8,580 #5 Posted March 2, 2020 73auto, did you pull the quadrant apart ? main thru bolt, to remove the quadrant and look it over ? did one not too long ago on a (c )frame plow , rarely if ever greased , rusty/galling slide pin . think i added a couple of thin washers to firm up the main thru bolt . did a alot of detailing loose linkage points , along with lucas red and tacky grease to insure lubrication. built it up on milk crates , using a stool ,let me experiment with function ,till i got it ware i wanted it. also used safety clip pins to secure removal points. my cotter pins broke off flush. pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

peter lena 8,580 #7 Posted March 3, 2020 good access point picture, you can reach in with needle nose pliers on that lever rod that goes up into the bottom of quadrant box mount. then you can remove the main bolt nut and pull out the bolt . then you can see and work on each issue, spring etc, pick up a spring at t/s , good selection. i replaced my lever rod with fine threaded rod and a 1/2" heim joint on each end , super smooth and very solid. once you pull it apart its not to bad to make it all better . as i said i used a roller stool to move around the plow on milk crates and built and verified the operation of each movement point. taking it apart is the easiest thing you can do for better repair, pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I concur, this will give you more than enough room to do the job. I have also changed the pin and spring by removing the service port from the top and using needle nose with a flat head screwdriver to hold the spring back. I prefer silver anti seize as a lubricant that can be applied with a paint brush thru the service port. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
