JCM 9,406 #1 Posted February 29, 2020 Last weekend when the weather was nice I started the 520 and drove it out of the garage and took a look underneath and found some oil near the lift cylinder and hydraulic valve and a slight slapping sound at low idle coming from the belt tensioner area behind the right side cover and also the choke needed to be kept on slightly for the engine not to surge, but of course when I did the fluid change and lube etc in the fall the tractor ran flawlessly until the first snowfall. Having another tractor with a bucket loader I have been enjoying that this winter. It has been about 5 years since the cab has been off but I think the time is near to remove it and the 44'' two stage and take care of one of my favorite WH's. The question is should the cab be put back on after maintenance is done or take a chance and store it and go without it for next winter. There is no oil on the garage floor but from what I see it needs to be addressed. What do you guys think looks better cab or no cab? I have found in life things that look better are usually not as functional but I feel the tractor looks nice without it. 1 1

But you'll be utterly the abominable snowman again... This warmth keeps up and you'll be able to bring a couple up for a woods ride here.
Stepney 2,325 #3 Posted February 29, 2020 (edited) Being you only run it with a blower in general, I feel it'd make sense for the cab to go back on. My GT1848 has always seeped a bit from the lift valve, even after I rebuilt it. Not a drip per se, but enough for dust to be attracted. Granted, your right is also much nicer than my old GT so might as well have a crack at it. All of mine 'slap' when they want a new belt haha.. especially my newer models. My GT makes horrible rattling even with new belts. With any luck your carb will just run itself clear.. I can never get over how beautiful that machine looks for the year. JCM 9,406 #4 Posted February 29, 2020 @Stepney I am hoping to possibly find a nice Hydro tractor for mowing and don't need a deck as I have enough nice ones now. If I don't find one I will put the cab back on but really miss mowing with it as it considerably faster than the 8 speeds.
Stepney 2,325 #5 Posted February 29, 2020 Shame my '66 was a bit of an old geezer. It was a wonderful old hydro otherwise. Your still trying to find a hydro, and I'm still trying to find an old 8 speed .. why do I feel like we've had this conversation before? The way things are priced these days, I'd be frightened to see a machine of your 520's condition be posted..

JCM 9,406 #9 Posted February 29, 2020 Since residing in Maine for 11 years I am constantly checking CL and UH and can not believe what some people ask for a WH tractor that may be worth 300 to 500 and they ask 1000 to 2000 and I would be willing to bet those tractors now sit in their back yards overgrown with weeds. I just don't understand their thinking. I have also found this to be true in parts of Mass and NH.
Pollack Pete 2,273 #10 Posted February 29, 2020 I like the " no cab " look.But...….I don't like snow blowing up my you know what.I'd never blow snow without a cab again.Even a non-heated cab is better than no cab when blowing snow. Not a real big deal to put on and take off.Only problem is storing the cab safely when it's off.
lynnmor 7,354 #11 Posted February 29, 2020 I partially disassemble the cab and put the parts in the top hanging from the ceiling. No wasted floor space and no damage. I use a drill with a 7/16" socket and end wrenches to make quick work of installing and removing.
Bigtrx34 321 #12 Posted February 29, 2020 I'm with most everyone else on this on the tractor "looks" so much better without the cab. I would have to say blowing snow without one as I do SUCKS as I am sure you know. I very much like the idea of taking it off when not in use and if you have the space a "closet" could be made to store in a safe place when not in use. A simple 2X4 construction with a 1/2 in or two black pipe rod at the top to hang the cab from and sheeting of your choice with a simple hinge lock door you got a safe clean place to put your cab. Putting the "closet" on casters would allow you to roll it over the tractor hook up to the top and lift it away. This is all trademark stuff here folks
