David Ullman 142 #1 Posted February 28, 2020 I took out the three speed and replaced it with a six speed, in the future I'll be swapping the pulley to gear it up a little. 4 4
ebinmaine 67,266 #2 Posted February 28, 2020 Another nice looking rig David! How much faster will you be trying to go?
David Ullman 142 #3 Posted February 28, 2020 I'm not sure yet, and I'm not even sure if you go bigger or smaller on the transmission pulley.
ebinmaine 67,266 #4 Posted February 28, 2020 Bigger on the engine pulley will make you go faster. Same as smaller on the transmission pulley. I've done a couple of pulley swaps on my machines but they were not to make my tractors go faster. My terrain is just too rough for that. One thing to keep in mind that I had no realization of was that there are minimum diameter pulleys for a given width of belt to create effective friction and tension. That tractor probably has a half inch belt... I'm guessing? The transmission pulley really shouldn't be any smaller than about 2" or you may not have enough grip on the pulley, by the belt.
David Ullman 142 #5 Posted February 28, 2020 Thanks, I'll look into that.
ri702bill 8,283 #6 Posted February 28, 2020 David: Yours looks like it started out as a 1962 502 or 552. Nice tractor. I did the swap on my 854 using the Unidrive from a 1979 C81. No regrets. Bill 3 1

857 horse 2,581 #8 Posted February 28, 2020 AT THE TIME,,I WASNT AWARE THERE WAS A SQUARTE PLATE ON THE BACK OF THE FRAME,,,,SO I MADE AN ADAPTER,,,,ITS AN 8 SPEED OUT OF A 310-12............MY FIRST BUILD..... 1
Pullstart 62,783 #9 Posted February 28, 2020 Seems like a low gear in a round hood is a favorite of many! This is an 8 speed out of a ‘78 C-101. Seems I put a similar sized pulley as a stock 502 because my engine pulley was smaller than the later model donor, but I think the input shaft was a different size? @stevasaurus was one 5/8” and the other 3/4”? 2
stevasaurus 22,706 #10 Posted February 28, 2020 Yep, 3/4" was on the early 3 and 4 speeds. 5/8" on the 8 speeds.
