stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #1 Posted February 28, 2020 Has anyone modified (shortened) a set of D series hubs to fit on an 8 speed? Is the keyway the same width?
Achto 27,502 #2 Posted February 28, 2020 I have never owned any D series hubs. All other hubs use a 1/4" key. Chiming in to get my learn on.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,330 #3 Posted February 28, 2020 My friend VinsRJ just sent me the measurements of an 8 speed hub to a D series hub 8 speed is 5 lug x 4 1/2" D series is 6 lug x 6" It was suggested that I try and source a wheel adapter but not sure where I can find that conversion. pfrederi 17,663 #4 Posted February 28, 2020 D series has 1/4" key but it is an #RX very odd length and height ratio.

Option # one would be to go with the "D" hubs if that is the size wheel you plan to run. Option # two would be to have a set made at a machine shop, but that would be too expensive. The key for the "D", GT-14 and 953/1054 is an odd one, but you could use a piece of 1/4 X 1/2 flat stock to make your own. Your C-195 probably has the same hubs and keys as the "D".

82Caddy 851 #7 Posted February 28, 2020 It'd be easy enough to cut another keyway into the D series hub to match the 8 speed axle assuming you have the same diameter axles if the keyways are indeed different. Cutting down the hub on the non wheel mounting side wouldn't be an issue either with the appropriate machining equipment (or a grinder depending how "finished" you want the product to be). That is if your intended purpose was to be able to run a D series wheel.

pfrederi 17,663 #9 Posted February 28, 2020 No need for new keyways...all involved here are 1/4" wide.
