Bert 760 #1 Posted February 26, 2020 (edited) Hey gang, I’ve gotten all the peace’s I need to swap a 520 gear reduction steering setup into my 416, but I’m wanting to use the C195 axle I snagged off eBay. It’s narrower so the tie rods may need modifications but that’s not a big deal My goal is to have a hydro lift tractor that steers easy but doesn't have a wide foot print needing a 48” snow/dozer blade. Also don’t want to use a plow extension. I have a new extra hydro foot control on the shelf that I’m considering using on this one as well, if it comes together it outta be great worker Any thoughts or suggestions? SylvanLakeWH 26,155 #3 Posted February 26, 2020 Sounds like a good idea! Keep the pics coming as you progress!!! 1
peter lena 8,877 #4 Posted February 26, 2020 bert , you can use threaded rod and heim joints for linkage , found that to be very solid and smooth , heim joints are about $ 7 each and fine thread rod about $12 . pete
Racinbob 11,307 #5 Posted February 27, 2020 I go one step further by cutting a piece of 3/8" ID tubing to fit once I get the length proper for the correct alignment. I like the idea of heim joints and the nest pair of rods will probably use them. 3
Bert 760 #6 Posted February 27, 2020 Update, I brought the 195 axle to work and had roughly 1/4 inch of material removed from the backside area that the axle pin runs through. That got it to fit in a typical frame, next was to see if the 520 tie rods would fit and as I suspected they are to long. I’ll work on that later, for now here are some pics of the test fit on a 520 parts tractor or 3
Pullstart 63,204 #7 Posted February 28, 2020 Those tie rods are awesome! Cut the r/h threaded side down to size and re-thread... you’re all set!

Bert 760 #9 Posted February 28, 2020 As stated above the original 520 tie rods are now shorter, I test fitted every thing and it’s good The next thing will be getting this swapped over to the 416 2
Pullstart 63,204 #10 Posted February 29, 2020 I didn’t realize 520 rod ends were ball joint style like that! That’s automotive tough!

Yes the factory 520 steering setup is tough, but it has its flaws. I’ve used a front dozer-snow blade on a few 520’s and it sticks out so far that on uneven ground it rubs while in the raised position. This setup in theory will have the benefits of both, I think missed an opportunity to offer a gear reduction unit with a straight axle utilizing the heavy 1” spindles The catch is that C 195 axles aren't easily found and for good reason, I would fix one before parting it out and most fans would probably agree Edited February 29, 2020 by Bert 1
Bert 760 #12 Posted May 17, 2020 It’s been awhile sense any progress was posted and that’s because I’ve been working through this shutdown. I purchased some new wheels from Northern Tool and they fit perfectly and have the correct clearance for the mule drive 3

I was going to suggest measuring everything to make sure the tires dont hit the deck or Mule Drive. Looking good so far 1

Bert 760 #17 Posted June 28, 2020 I finally got around to swapping all of the pieces on to the 416. The process was the same as any forward swept/gear reduction job so no need to get into that. Im pleased to share that this project turned out better than I could have hoped for there are no clearance issues or any other negative compromises
71_Bronco 1,072 #18 Posted June 28, 2020 (edited) Looks great! Only downside would be the increased number of turns for the wheel (due to the reduction), but that would be a personal preference more than anything. Doesnt really effect how it works mechanically. Thanks, I personally like the ease of steering even if it’s more turns on the wheel, this will be ideal for a dozer blade I think.
