AHS 1,440 #1 Posted February 24, 2020 I got the 48” deck with my 414 for $300.... so.. $300 for the tractor, $00 for the deck... ok, so the more and more I look at it; everything is welded on! The blades.. 2 of them are welded on, the spindles.. 2 of them are broken right in half (there is 2 bolts holding them on instead of 4), no belt, the deck needs to be welded (rust holes), the front wheel is welded on, the deck is bent around it, so it will not cut level.... $$$$ is what pops into my head! I’m thinking just to hold onto it for parts.... I mean what’s good used 48” deck gonna cost me? $300?
The Tuul Crib 7,336 #2 Posted February 24, 2020 I had one that was kind of the same way someone went a little slaphappy with the welder. And there are some people that should not even own one if you know what I mean. Looks like one of your spindle hubs is rotted and those can be a little pricey finding one. Someone here on Red Square is found to have a deck in decent shape for sale

If your going to weld the a nut on a shaft a simple tack weld or two will suffice.
peter lena 8,583 #4 Posted February 24, 2020 just be on the hunt and look around , you might find one that is not too bad. strongly recommend a thorough look over , especially bottom side for neglect and rotting grass build up. even if you had to rebuild the spindles , getting a rot free deck is worth it. done a few of them , not too bad. rotting w/h decks made me a fanatic on rustproofing them and oil soaking the bottom side to preserve deck. also use LUCAS RED AND TACKY GREASE in the spindles for very solid and quiet running. i prefer the r/d decks , as they don,t build up like the s/d decks do , bigger opening more discharge. hope you find one , good luck , pete

Rotting from grass build up... WH decks are hard to find...here in Maine!! I think I have three spindles that are off an old 42” SD deck. Just like you said @peter lena oil soaking the bottom side of them!! Whatever it takes to keep from getting rust holes in it!
Stepney 2,325 #6 Posted February 24, 2020 (edited) Decks are hard to find here in Maine .... That being said, I hoard them and I'm in Maine too. If your looking for a rebuild-able 48", drop me a line. I have 3 or 4 of them. Atleast 2 that are more or less solid and straight, with just a few soft spots around the discharge. Also have a good spare complete set of running gear. I like my 48"s and run them often. I often buy a whole tractor just for the deck haha. AHS 1,440 #12 Posted February 25, 2020 I just got the score of a lifetime! Wheel weights, 4 link v bar chains, a mule drive and incomplete 42” RD. The linkage is broken on the back of the deck. And cracked around a bolt..no big deal. A lot better shape than the 48”! Oh and I forgot to mention that I got the package for $50!!😁👍
AHS 1,440 #13 Posted February 25, 2020 Just started to work on it! The spindles are a bit dry... they bearings move, but they are a bit dry!
Stepney 2,325 #14 Posted February 25, 2020 Those spindles rebuild easily. I have a few parts 42RD's if you can't weld that bracket yourself.

I was wondering if a 42” SD was the same as a rear discharge... I mean the bracket? Ok, so you can just buy those bearings? Just the top and bottom? @Stepney The 42” SD is my dads, full of rust holes... but otherwise it’s all set... the towers have good bearings and the bracket is all set. (All whole!) Stepney 2,325 #16 Posted February 25, 2020 There were two different sets of bearings. Someone may come along sooner than I will get home tonight before I check my books, but measure the diameter of both ends of your spindle shafts, also having a woodruff key makes a difference in which bearing you need.. if I remember. Have done a few dozen but can never quite remember. There's a circlip on the bottom bearing, and I think one at the top too. They will tap out with some oil and persuasion. I don't think the carrier frames are the same between the SD and RD. Save those spindle housings off any scrap deck if they are serviceable. They aren't cheap..

AHS 1,440 #18 Posted February 26, 2020 Ya! I’m guessing a mid 80’s to 90’s deck?? It doesn’t have The reinforced bottom edge, the ribbing at the bottom.... what year did they do that? The only place that needs some work, on the deck is right in front of my drill...cracked around the bolt. The deck is already half stripped, so I might as well finish stripping it and paint the top and de rust the bottom. @tom2p

Not broken in half and welded! So, if you have the rear right one, please. I guess, send the piece up here. Here are some pics. On RedSquare, I will send you the address.
