Looked at a 856 Friday afternoon (w/belly mower), and I was impressed. He told me it had been in his family for many years (second owner, used when they purchased) looked very solid to me, not beat, and no rust, but no decals. We talked quite a while, and the only reason he parked it was the fact that it was noncurrent (parts). I am thinking about buying it to put a tiller on it to resell, for I don't have room for the tiller and haven't been able to sell it on a stand alone basis. He wants premium money for the unit, but the biggest drawback is the tiller drive would have to be rigged up nonstandard and I would rather keep the integrity of the standard setup than juakali it. Don't know at this point what I will do, as $250 would stretch my budget at this point, but he has several items I have great interest in. Oh well, guess that's life.

Any thoughts?

As we all know that is simply incorrect.

There are PLENTY of parts available... If you know or care where to look.

Depends on your definition of a stretched budget.

Only you can really answer that but it seems like you're hesitant to do it for that reason and not wanting to resell something that isn't original or not set-up right. (And that's good)

:twocents-02cents:     Not too sure a tiller would be the best thing for an 856, seems like an 8 speed is better unless the ground is sandy.

Pullstart

I feel like $250 is a very fair price for a well kept 856.  With an 8 speed in Putt Putt, a little finagle work with pulleys and one of Lowell’s hitches, my little 8 horse Kohler pulled it through virgin soil just dandy... but I agree with Richard.  You need the low range.

It is a 6 speed, I was surprised by that. Downloaded info. on it, but it said nothing about being limited slip differential.

That was a swap out by a PO.

856 would have been a 3 speed from the factory.

If it's a 6 speed it'll be  limited slip.

If they swapped in an 8 speed it'll most likely be open differential.

No worries. Well, there you be. An 867 is one of the most desirable models to a lot of us.

That's Trina's favorite tractor. I'd get another one of them up here in a heartbeat if I had a way to do it for $250.
