Building A New Pole Shed For The Horses

As I have eluded to off and on for the last six or seven months, I am finally going to start a thread on the construction of my new pole building. 

 

It's been a long time coming, and I have made and scrapped many plans, but the latest rendition of my new pole building is final, and the components are being delivered on Thursday, 2/27.

 

Back during the summer, I cleared a spot in my woods that is about 20 x 24. We leveled it, tamped it, and that as far as we got due to undependable contractors, weather, vacation, and some health issues with yours truly.

 

I put the 416-H to work in August.

 

 

Then the rains came and work came to a stop.

 

 

In September, the family went to Disney World, and while there I visited member @Zeek. After seeing his new metal building, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

 

 

But vacation had it's pitfalls. My wife fell and dislocated her shoulder, and I developed a viral infection. She healed and I continued with my virus until late October. Along with that, I continued to have issues with my ongoing Atrial Fibrillation. Then my concrete contractor put me off until the second week of December, and the metal building manufacturer, Alan's Factory Outlet, changed their specifications requiring me to have a larger concrete pad or smaller building. So I scrapped them and contracted with Fetterville Sales of Lancaster, PA. They are doing the entire project from building to concrete.

 

Then the County got in the way. The building permit got held up it the Forestry Department. What??? That department has nothing to do with individual permits, only contractors clearing large areas of trees.

 

So, here is am. I cleaned the leaves off of the leveled area and am now waiting for delivery of building materials on Thursday. Wish me luck.

Good luck, I’m jealous!! I’ll be following this post! Last December I purchased this 12x24 prebuilt shed/garage and although I absolutely love it I quickly found out I need about four more of these!!!!!

Nope. It's a pole building. Poles go up, building is built, stone is placed inside, concrete poured.

18x20 sounds great! So is it a workshop or storage or both? Running power to it?

Will be running a 30 amp service from the garage to the shed/shop. The run will be about 100 feet, underground and inside plastic conduit. Already have the space allotted in the garage breaker box. The County had me designate it as a "shed" so that there were fewer inspections and lower cost. I will have to wait until after the U&O sign-off to run the wire.

Do you need a seepage pit Bob.       When I built my 24X32 pole  barn in 2000, the township required a pit that took 3 inspections and cost $1200.    I could have put in as many prefab buildings as I wanted  without any permits or runoff pits, but on site building was totally different.

I hope everything goes well from here on out Bob. Sounds like you've had your share of problems lately. Just from looking at the plans the building looks awesome.

I have high hopes. My health issues seem to be under control, and the company that is supplying and building the building is Amish. From what I am told, they are as reliable as the sunrise. We will see.

Here in southern Maine there are several families that are Mennonite.

That is my impression of them as well.

Not out east where you guys are but the Amish built my parent's pole shed (60x120) 18 years ago in Minnesota.  They quoted 12 days (I think it was) to build from start to finish.  They did only work on it for 12 days, but not in a row.  It was like 1 day here 2 days there and took the better part of the summer to build, my parents were super frustrated with the process since it wasn't clearly laid out for them.  It sure is a nice building though all said and done.

Good luck with the building project... But are you sure 18x20 is big enough? here's mine from start (2017) to this year 1 Mahindra eMax, 1 Cub Cadet Original , 1 Suzuki ATV, 3 Wheel Horse, 1 lawn cart , 1 lawn sweeper, all the sleeve hitch implements 3 mower decks and 3 chain saws and mortar mixer... I think I might be able to walk between 1 or 2 things  Of course doors would be a nice addition.

It'll soon gets full though. Mine is 22wide x 19deep. I just wish I could have built it bigger. Unfortunately I don't have the land you lads seem to.

It's going to have to be. The budget won't allow any larger and neither will the wife.

I'd be giddy too.VERY nice looking building.Are you going to install some shelving? Great to get stuff off the floor and onto shelves that would only be wasted wall space.Keep us posted on the progress.I love new buildings!!

I hope to put a large "shelf" in the rear to run tractors under, then stack some of the smaller ones on the shelf, similar to what @stevebo did.

Let’s face it, no matter how big you make it, it’s never big enough!! The bigger it is the more stuff you will find to fill it up. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a guy say “ I’ve got this garage/barn that’s just too darn big!”

Believe it or not, no. I got when PADOT scrapped it when they re-did the PA RT 15 @ Cumberland Parkway interchange. It used to be a traffic signal.

my neighbor had a huge pole building built by an Amish company 

 

they stayed at his house during construction 

 

they did a great job

I think it was @Achto Dan who said it best...  “Build your barn twice as big as you think you need, then in three years it’ll be half as big as you need,” or something like that.
