Wheel horse rock crawler

So last night I had a dream about a wheel horse go figure I love wheel horse tractors and love off roading and my kids so I gave up full size rig wheeling family and cost. But why should my kids suffer! So my dream last night was taking the 312-8 in very rough body shape apart turn the rear trans sideways to create a 4x4 trans and pull the pulley and adapte a cub cadet driveshaft clutch to the kholer then use Suzuki axles and build a chassis around it. So was it a dream or could it be reality? What's your thoughts. Quarter elliptic suspension and 3 point hitch top links for link arms keep it tractor and of course red

WHX??

I say go for it dude... many things were accomplished in this world by a dream....

It's already been done before so totally possibly. One of our over the pond brethren @meadowfieldbuilt a rig and he's got vids of it crawling over stone fences!

Me Like

You'd have to lock the pinion gears inside the WH trans differential to use it like that.

Did you build that little tube frame?

I seen people make those articulating tractors by turning the transmissions so I thought why not my worry is it needs to be fully lock trans how can i check the transmission will turn both outputs all the time?

I have a 59rj 60 suburban a 1992 416h and this beat up 312-8 plus other brands i do have issues but dont we all that's why were here ha:teasing-tease:

Either weld it (Lincoln locker) thanks to @Stepney for reminding me of that term.

Or you could ((maybe?)) Remove the 8 pinions and replace them with solid rods??

Thanks I think this project will really be a neat vehicle. I just need to get parts together to start axles are going to be the hardest to find so if anyone knows of suzuki samurai axles laying around feel free to pass the info.

And I'll take the trans out and see the model and see if anyone knows how it can be locked with out welding gears together lol but that may just happen.

Hopefully next June it will be at the show. I'm hoping to make it there this year just to go for the first time.

Pullstart

Sounds like a fun project!  I had dreamed of using a front wheel drive car’s drivetrain for just that, then they built one on Dirt Every Day.  It was a fun one to follow along, but seemed like a huge headache for them.  All in all, you have HUGE gear reduction through two final drives (tractor transmission outputs then axle r&p’s)

This behind the scenes with Fred is a great view from yay sayers along with nay sayers.  Unfortunately, Motor Trend seems to have greedier pockets than YouTube is willing to pay, so they took videos away and make you pay to see them now.

For what you are suggesting I think I would bypass the WH trans all together and just use the CVT from a snow machine or something similar.  It automatically solves the power distribution problem from to rear and will be more trail friendly since the WH transmissions aren't synchronized and can't be shifted on the roll.  You'll also have a wider range of available gear ratios to use.
