5053 Clean and Rebuild

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie to Wheel Horses (my experience is with cub cadets) but my next project will be using a 3 speed transmission out of a friend old Wheel Horse which I believe is a 5053. The input shaft was stuck so I decided to split the casing and see what the issue was. Luckily it was just a rusty bearing and now everything is loose. My issue now is finding and replacing the seals for the axles, input shaft, and the brake shaft. 

 

Are these seals hard to find? Are there any tricks to removing the old seals or installing the new ones? 

 

Again, I'm a newbie to these so if these are dumb questions please bare with me. I'm sure ill have more questions come up as i go further with the project.

If you take a look at the transmission section, one of the threads pinned near the top is seal and bearing cross reference information.

 

Those parts are readily available from many different sources.

As EB said at the top of this section is a pinned thread that has all the part numbers if you wish to source them local. You'll find most of the bearings & seals are common sizes.  These are fairly easy to work on so if you can do a Cub rear end you can do these. The big thing is to press the new bearings in … no BFH on them. Put tape over keyways to keep from nicking seals when installing. All capped bearings flush with the inside cases. Open bearings just enough to install the seal.

That transmission is just the beginning.  With that red horse in you barn, the yellow better be wary,  soon there will be more red than yellow.  When they breed with the yellow,  they come out red as it's the dominate color.  :ychain:

Ok, 

I am finally getting back to working on this transmission. I am going to be ordering the gasket and probably the outer axle seals. 

 

Do you guys have any other suggestions? Is one of the needle bearings or other seals a good candidate for replacement?

While you have it split it's not a bad idea to do wheel bearings and seals.

 

All parts can be had from our vendor Wheelhorse parts and more.

Fit the axles or shafts into their respective bearings and if you can move them more than 1/32" or even 1/64 I would replace them. Easier to do it now when you have it split.

For about $7 each I always replace the axle needle bearings when it is split....My time is worth something  .maybe not much but something:P

 

Besides when needle bearings fail like this bad things happen....

Just rebuilt a 701 transmission (5007) and the most expensive seal was the smallest one, the SKF-7410. That's the input shaft seal. After buying one locally for about $7.50, I found 3 more in a bin that I had overlooked. Duh! But the bad news/good news is that I damaged the new seal putting it in. So I had a spare. Damaged that one too. Found out what was causing the problem and the third one was the charm. Still have a spare.

I usually have three on the shelf. I take the first two and lay them on the bench and BFH them to destroy them and get it over with. Third one goes in no problem! :lol:

When you get to the point where you are tired and just want to get it done, you sometimes just have to bow to the NAPA store manager and walk away with the expensive one. :stupid:

I understand besides if you only need one thing yours works out to be cheaper.  Even the auto parts store is a long drive for me and if they have to get it  then two trips...
